I rode by a neighbors house the other day and noticed he had a maxim sitting in his garage. He was out in the yard, so I stopped and asked him about his bike. He said it needed a lot of work, so much so, that he was considering parting it out. I'm kinda interested in the motor. Could it be mounted in my bike?

It would probably be easier just to fix the maxim x.m sure the motor could be made to fit but you will have to fabricate brackets for the cooling thermostat radiator not sure if the fan will fit it. ect. Then you will have to swap out the wire harness tci ect. not sure if your tach will work with it if you have an atari i wont work. Also if it is a 750 maxim x its not a us model. I think it would take much less work to fix the other bike then it would to do all the fabrication to yours

Fixing the X maybe the better path...but I don't want an X. No offense to any X owners, but I'm not a big fan of Harley clones and that's the direction Yamaha styling went with the Maxim in '85. The mod's you pointed out aren't that tough. I'm also a little jealous about some of the builds posted here and I think I'd like to jump into a project like this. Also, my nephew has a bike identical to mine that I can probably get real cheap. So, that would give me a bike to put the motor in. I love my '82! I just think it would be fun to have one with more power. I'd prefer to get that power increase from Yamaha engineers. How much different is the shaft drive?

No offense? That was about the most offensive thing you could possibly say to an X owner!!!

Well that's fine! We don't want you to have one anyway...

Yamaha put the "X" engine in a 750R, they called it the FZ750.

The "X" engine is the "next generation" XJ motor; the cylinders are slanted forward at a greater angle than the aircooled XJs.

Despite some basic resemblances, they are completely different bikes.

While anything is of course, "doable" with enough fabrication, this isn't really a "bolt-in" proposition. The frame would need to be completely reconfigured; easier to just fix the "X."

Nothing too spooky so far...I'm gonna go take some measurements and see what he wants for the X and possibly pick up the extra '82. Maybe I can sell X parts to help with the $$. I've got a great shop and welders. I just might have a project here!

No offence taken, but I can't see any "Clone" in regards to a Maxim X looking like a Harley. (to me anyway) :?
I looked and tried to get two bikes that were posed the same so that I could present a comparison.
Maybe I'm biased as I'm an "X" owner.
    Just sayin'.

    Joke? Me? Naaaawwwwww...

Actually, there are times when my ardor for the styling of the X cools, but it always comes back. True love never dies!!

It seems this thread draws more interest in my personal style preference than the actual project I'm considering. Again, it's all about personal taste. Sorry for the comment.

Anyway, this project isn't gonna happen. The owner of the trashed X decided to give it to a member of his family. I think an '82 with an X motor would be pretty cool though.

Rats!! I just found this pic for you...

Okay, it's a Seca, but same mounts and such, so it appears it can be done.

WHOA!!! That looks fast just sitting on the side stand! X performance in a chassis with suspension to handle it, nice find.
Maybe it's just the angle, but I wouldn't want to bottom out those front forks, the fender looks like it would hit the rad. But maybe it's just the angle.

MaximumX, looking at your bike list, you might know which runs stronger: the 900 or the X? 97 hp for the 900? I bet a 900 engine would fit well in an '82 750. Another build consideration.

Well, take this with a grain of salt... My X is a little tweaked with pods and 4-1, so it loses a little on the bottom end.

The 900 pulls pretty much from off-idle and has a nice, smooth delivery. Similar enough HP ratings (750X - 90, 900 - 97, but the 700X only kicks out 86, according to online specs, all at 9000 rpm), but The 900 delivers max torque at 5000rpm, the X at 8000. Seat of the pants-wise, I think the X gives more of a rush when you're opening it up over 6000 rpm...

Maintenance-wise, the 900 is probably easier as far as valves and such go. And you don't have liquid-cooling to fuss with. And the sparkplugs are easier to get to... And on and on... But I still love my X!

I'm reluctant to admit it but, there are a couple similarities....the struts along the rear fender, two-peice seats, basic frame design....

Yamaha technology is, and always has been, light years ahead of Harley so I seriously doubt there was any 'concious intention' on Yami's part to copy HD.

Besides, it was HD's whining that led to the passage of the import tarriff that resulted in the creation of the 700X in the first place....if anything, it was probly a 'nose-thumbing' thing more than design copy.
