Does anyone know if the gas tank badges fro
An early 80's XS650 will fit on an 81 XJ550 gas tank?

Doubtful. I'm pretty sure the hole offsets are different.

However, the badges for the 550 Maxim, 550 Seca, and 650 Maxim, despite being different part numbers, are virtually interchangeable. There is a slight difference in the "pre-curvature" but they pull right down with the mounting screws and fit just fine.

This is good because the 650 Maxim badges are still VERY available and not expensive; check with chacal (he carries them of course.) I have a set on one of my bikes; you can't tell the difference.

That's a shame. I found a site last night that sells replica xs650 badges for $30 a pair

You got me wondering so I pulled the badges off an xs650 Heritage tank and tried them on my 550 Seca tank. They fit just fine. Only difference I could see is that the XS badges are silver and not gold.

I believe it was off an '83 XS650 Heritage Special. It was sitting in my friend's garage since about '86 when we pulled it off the bike to replace the tank. It was smashed on one side. I brought it home with a ton of other parts for various bikes from the early to mid 80's.
