82 XJ650 bobber (finished)

    I bought the bike about a year ago and It's been a trooper. Got a good deal and it just needed a little maintnance and some carb work. Now It's time for a change. I'm gonna start the process and bob it but I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions along the way.

    From the picture it looks like you have a nice bike to start with it. You can go as far as you want with it all depends on your skill level and budget. Me personally like the hardtailed stretched bobbers but it's your baby plenty of examples on here and on thechopperunderground.com good luck and have fun.

    Got the bike in the garage and started pullin stuff off today. New bates style seat and some progressive lowering shocks came today. I'm gonna keep the frame a soft tail so I gotta come up with a good way to mount the new solo seat without it lookin to bulky. Also I ran into my first hang up. I was able to get the left foot peg off easy enough but the right one is a different story. Is there a trick to getting that right stock foot peg off? The "bolt shaft" (if I can call it that) only comes out so far before it just turns freely. Probably somethin simple : /

    that bolt shaft goes all the way throught the bike,its actually a motor mount as well,i used a jack under engine,its one bolt that holds both pegs on.I was in the same boat,i was like DAMMMIT how long is this bolt,then i figured it out...lol..good luck on the chop,im building one as well.

    Finally got around to making some cuts to the frame. Took the front blinker mounts off and grinded smooth. Now I need to figure out how I want to mount the seat. Wish it was warm enough to paint

    Good luck with your project! Just to give you some ideas (and because i'm proud of it and posting links all over the place boosts my already enlarged ego) check out my bike:

    The rear fender and seat are from a Harley sportster. The moral of the story is: keep an open mind and be creative. There are a LOT of different parts that will work and look good on these bikes, some with little to no modifications needed to install. Keep the pics coming and happy riding!

    Just got my new valve cover gasket and some pressure washers. Thanks Chacal! Those washers sure are a pain in the A$$ to get off and on though. Also got the exhaust system off, plugged the leaks, and cleaned it all up. Wrapped the headers with some heat wrap to. Took some time but I finally figured out how I'll go about mounting my seat so I'm excited to see how it all looks. I will post some pics soon

    70 degrees! Going to go buy all the paint today then locking myself in the garage till monday. Hopefully I'll get everything painted and figure out what I'm going to do with my taillight. Gotta step things up with weather like this. Wish me luck

    Does anyone have suggestions for a strong paint stripper? Any suggestions on typ of paint for the tank? I don't know much about paint but I'm assuming rattle can would just come off if I happen to drip some gas on the tank when I fill up (happens to me all the time) Is there a paint out there that can withstand some drops of gas?

    well as for stripping the paint....I like Aircraft paint stripper, you can get it at walmart, its relatively cheap, but it does a pretty good shop.

    I'm thinking about trying out some pods but from what I hear on the forums it's a 50-50 if they work well or not. Can anyone recommend a particular brand/type of pod filter?

    Seems like the home-built PVC air box replacement (with either a single or dual air filter pod) works much better. Do a search.

    Ah yes, much better than stock for sure!! It doesn't take much to make the bike look more like the old school bobber. They jusy look meaner and more powerful that way.

    Nice build. A couple questions for you. I read where you were considering pods, but from the pictures it is unclear what exactly you did so if you could snap a picture of the airbox I would be thankful. Secondly is the fender just a cut version of the plastic under-fender piece? Looks very clean and well done overall, great job!

    I would love it if you could post more pics of the beginning to end process and maybe some close ups of the instruments, bars, seats, engine, and rear fender.

    Your bike is ALMOST exactly how I want mine to look.
