I managed to really foul my paint on my red 82 XJ650. What color do you think most closely matches the original paint? If any?

Just so you know - they make a clear coat in a rattle-can that is a 2-part paint, that is fuel-proof. You will want to pick a color that is chemically compatible with this clear coat.

Thanks for the tip TimetoRide. I'll look for that at my local big box store.

I think it's available at auto paint outlets, and maybe E-Bay.

It's called Spraymax 2K Clear. Used regular VHT rattlecans on my tank refin, along with the Spraymax, and it holds up, wonderfully. The Spraymax atomized like no other paint bomb I've ever used and was SUPER easy to shoot with zero runs.

I don't know if there was more than one shade of "red" in 1982, but I've got a red 82 SECA 550, and a durn near perfect match is:

    Plasti-kote Classic Lacquer - #346 Bright Red

I tried about ten different shades of red before I hit on that one. It's very close to the stock SECA red. Only problem is that the can I have is from 2004 so I can't guarantee they still offer that color.

Another advantage is that it was not classified as a "automotive match color". It was a generic color which means the can is bigger and the price was cheaper. :!:

If you have a spray gun our resident parts Gruru chacal has the paint already match mixed. Check out his catalog for more details.

I have also heard of duplicolor high heat engine clearcoat being used with good results. There are several good discussions about painting in the mods section.

indeed. engine/cover paint is quite fuel proof AFTER it's been heat cycled. Careful with that gas tank in the oven. Wife gets PISSED if you detonate the kitchen.

I always use high heat engine clear on tanks. I have never had a problem with fuel. Seems to be lots more durable. I wouldnt use anything but on a spray can paint job. I saw one of my bikes that i have painted on ebay. Paint was on there 30k miles still perfect i wrote the guy and asked him
