I think I enjoy the carb syncing process the most! After a complete teardownn of a carb rack for a 650 maxim, and a 750 Midnight maxim, I finally had some time to get around to starting up the bikes today. Here's my afternoon:

1982 650 Maxim - Took the brand new battery off of the charger and installed it. Hooked up the aux. gas tank and after a couple seconds of engine turning over, it caught and fired up........ on cyl. 2 and 3. Swapped leads now have 1 and 4. Swapped out the coil. Still just 2 and 3, then 1 and 4. Swapped out the TCI. Touched the button and ROAR to life!!!! all 4 firing well. Let it warm up, shutdown to hook up the carbtune, and from the benchsync setup, I adjusted the 3-4 screw a tiny bit and they were done. Then, 1-2 screw a bit, balanced both halves and was done in under 10 minutes. Purrs like a kitten, at 1150 and instant response to throttle.......... a new tire goes on tomorrow and ready to roll a bit!

SO, still have time left so lets go to the Midnight Max....

Hooked the brand new battery, and since the terminals were on the "wrong" sides had to make some other leads to reach. Hooked up the aux. gas tank, a bit of choke, touched the button, a few rotations and comes to life. So, she warmed up a bit then I shut her down to hook up the carbtune. Both sides were close to each other, but 1/2 were about half a turn away from 3/4. Still, about 10 minutes and I was done. Gotta do a sticky back brake lever tomorrow and I'm riding her to a cruise-in tuesday evening.

    I'm a happy camper today.....:)

The 650 is non- yics and the 750 I didn't use a yics too. Why? 1- I don't have one; 2- I've never used one. Why? 1- I don't have one; 2- I'm of the 'I don't have one in when I'm riding anyway" camp.

Putting my flame retardant suit on---

BTW - took the 750 out for a ride today (after a simple 'check the rear brake to find out why it's sticking and finding out that the rear pedal lever return spring was dead-replaced that, the pivot shaft was dry and packed with rust so had to pull the swingarm to remove that-greased that, then noticed that the big coiled up return spring ON the shaft was missing so got out the parts bin and put on on, only to find it doesn't fit----why? Cuz they don't HAVE one there.......wasted time on that. I checked my other 750 to find out why it didn't fit, that's when I found out they don't have one there.

SO........ since swingarm was off (and I took it off as unit to make it a bit quicker, I realized that I can't get the shaft back in the spline with everything as a unit. So.....off comes the wheel.

Well, until the pinch bolt broke. Fortunately is was loose enough that I could get the axle out anyway.

Back to the parts bin for a swingarm.

Swingarm in place, shaft in place, punkin in place......

May as well grease the brake lever and pivot on the brake hub. Hey, look at that...... a delaminated brake shoe!!!! First time having that happen. So....pull out another set from the parts bin, all's good, greased everything up, reassembled it all and THEN went out for a 6 mi ride. Feels good, runs reeeeeeeaally nice. I rode down the the dealer and got my inspection done, too, so now it's legal.

I do need a right side Midnight Maxim cover for the xj750, which I know is made of unobtanium, but at least I have the left side cover. I have a standard 750 right cover that I'll use in the meantime.

Quick question.....is there a trim piece that is supposed to be on the sides of the airbox? Mine doesn't have any......just bare pipes at the inlets to the mufflers.

It's gonna need a front tire sometime soon, too, but it runs nice now.

It's a nice project but I'm not in love with it....yet. So, it'll probably end up going up for sale and make a great project for someone else to continue. We'll see.
