About 5 blocks from school I began to smell gas, big time... When I pulled up to the light I leaned over to see if my fuel line came undone... What I saw about made me freak...

The rear part of my petcock was spurting out fuel like a cut artery -splash-splash-splash!

I ended up killing the bike and letting it rest in the far lot at school until I was able to pull off some red-neck ingenuity, but I do believe that seeing fuel spray all over a hot engine-between my legs-is something that I never wish to revisit!

    Phil's Fire

There's been at least four fires on XJBikes. Any Noobs still running 30 year old fuel line - you need to cough up a dollar. Phil lost his XJ, a car, AND his garage.

Oddly enough this thread popped up. Last weekend when installing my new valve gasket when I was taking the fuel line off of the petcock it just crumbled when I pulled on it. I guess after 29 years of feeding gas to the motor that old fuel line was done. I got a new one for like a buck at an local auto parts store. It was thicker than the old one but fits just fine 1/4" ID. I guess I was lucky....

Throw on a small inline fuel filter while you're replacing the line.
I don't see the point of the PRI setting, that is what starting fluid is for.
Adding a secondary off valve doesn't seem like a bad idea...

The PRI setting is to refill the float bowls any time they've been emptied for a reason, or have evaporated down a bit from the bike sitting. It's very necessary. You won't run long enough on starting fluid for the vac-op side of the petcock to refill all 4 float bowls if empty.

Adding a secondary "off" valve is fine, but completely unnecessary IF the petcock is functioning properly. I've rebuilt a number of them, and am running rebuilt units on my bikes, with no issues. But they do need to be kept clean, and periodically tested, as part of regular maintenance. For me, it's worth the trade-off for the convenience.

Thanks for the link bigfitz... I ordered a rebuild kit... but for the time being, I used a bit of black rtv on all four sides of the diaphragm and screwed it back up tight... Left it sit for about 2 hours and gave it a start... - no more leaks... but it will still be getting a rebuild... just for good measure.
