    I have no idea what it is and it sounds terrible but goes away for the most part when you pull the clutch in. It is a kind of rattling sound and it definatley sounds internal. Any ideas?

    Also, the bike has been shifting jerky lately. Maybe the clutch needs to be adjusted. I have no idea how to do that, some help would be great.

    Sounds like either the clutch baskets loose or worn and the steels are rattling

    Did you see my recent thread on the same topic?

    Rattling Noise On Idle - 550 Primary Chain HI-VO: (HY-VO)

    Not sure what bike you have, but there might be some info in there that helps.

    WHAT BIKE?

    The thread Rice_Burnarr linked to would very much apply if it's a 550/600; if it's a different bike then you need to investigate the clutch immediately.

    it is an 81 xj550. What is the oil capacity on these things, and this may sound dumb but is the oil filter housing up front with the cooling fins the way to drain the oil?

    Since you have a 550, the discussion in Rice_Burnarr's linked thread applies to you and will explain a bit about the sound you're hearing;

    Oil capacity is the little number on the clutch housing, by the filler, "2200CM3" means 2200 CCs. You'll actually need to use about 2400CCs, or 2.4L. I answered this in your other thread.

    And no, that's just the filter housing. The actual drain plug is underneath, on the front of the sump:

    And, as mentioned in my response in your other thread; use motorcycle oil. 20W50 is fine, I would not use 10W-anything. (Read the linked thread about the 550's HY-VO chain tensioner.)

    Dude; you need a book. SOON.
