ok, so I have the XJCD v4.04., but the parts diagrams are not clear, or differ from place to place. First off, my rebound springs are sticking about 1 1/2" out of the bottom of my top tube. guess that's not right? second, no parts diagrams at dealers show or list the metal bushing on the top(fixed) tube. any suggestions? third, which way do the aluminum spindle tabers face? looks like taper up in diagrams, but in service manual, laid out like it's down( called oil lock pc in service man pg 122). finally, does anybody else have a cap on the top with an adjustment screw for 3 preload settings and an aluminum plug with o-rings on top of springs? can't find that in any parts list. so my springs are only 18" and service manual says 20.6" thanks bob

I don't have a 900, but I happen to have a Haynes manual for that model sitting here, complete with an illustrated breakdown. Looking at the section on forks, and comparing its diagram with the XJCD diagram, they look about the same. I'm not sure which bushing you're referring to -- would it be possible to get a picture of the part in question?

Second, what's the model code on yours? This book only lists the British codes. :(

Hi bobnos , I had a similiar problem with replacing the top bushing in my xj650 tubes. they was badly worn from a bent lower triple clamp that the PO had forced back together. Yes ,it,s not a listed part , but I went to a local bike suspension specialist and found that it was a pretty standard item at quite a reasonable cost, for the 650 at least . Im fairly sure that the larger 900 size would be easily obtained also, from a similiar source. Good luck !

    cheers, Murray

thanks for the help. I just made a few "spindle tapers" or oil lock pc as its also called, I'll take some pics tonite and post. I think they go with taper up, but it should be interesting trying to get them and the wavy springs to stay in place to assemble. Also I'll try to get pics of adjustable caps, any body else have short springs? bob

pictures of components. specifically, which direction do alum. pcs go, and location of wavy spring discs. also note pre-load adj. caps. aftermarket? might explain why springs are 2" short

Comparing diagrams, what the XJCD diagram lists as a "Spring, valve" (item 27/62) is referred to in the Haynes as a Wave Washer, so that's where those go, I'm thinking.

The metal bushing on the tube is referred to as "Metal, Slide 1" (Item 5/40). Haynes calls it a "metal bush". I guess there are two -- upper and lower.

Not quite sure about those other bits, unfortunately, but I do get the impression from the Haynes that the taper does in fact go down, as you surmised.

You might want to get ahold of Chacal and see if he has any of these Haynes manuals onhand -- HCP1092 is his part number.
