I just disamsembled the #1 carb according to service manual instructions. However, the manual doesn't really specify how to clean it in order to make it effective. How would you guys do it in order to get good results? In addition, is there any lubricating that i need to do to the carb? if so what do I need?

get a peice of thin guitar string for the small passages, well worth it and you'll keep it in your toolbox

Don't use anything metal in the small passages, you can scratch them. Better to use a nylon bristle plucked from a stout parts-cleaning brush.

    Look here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=31061.html

You need to be sure all of the small jets and passages are clean; pay particular attention to:

The emulsion tubes and the tiny holes in their sides.
The pilot jet, main jet and pilot air jet.
The needle valve seat and needle valve tip.
The condition of the "beanie screens."
The (fixed) long enrichment tube that runs down into the float bowl.
The enrichment "wells" in the float bowls.

Do NOT soak or submerge the carbs unless you are pulling out the butterflies and throttle shafts to replace the throttle shaft seals. Those seals are "trapped" and if they don't need to be replaced then don't mess. Soaking the carbs can ruin them.

I think sometime back in 2010 I read a comment from Rickomatic:
"If she ain't home ... I heard some guy uses the Pot Scrubbing setting on the dishwasher."

Anyone had success with this approach and if so could you provide some detail as to how this should be done?

She's going to be away an I was just wondering...
