Thats exactly what I did, recoverd that bad boy and fabbed up a backrest (along with some other stuff) out of aluminum plate and coverd it the same. worked out better than I could have hoped too.

I used all grade 8 chrome bolts and a door hinge, a 10 piece or red oak and welded two of the bolts this is how it came out...

And here is a pic of the license plate light and mount I fabbed up. the light was 20 bucks from Cycle smith located in southern california. He also sells on ebay. I used the left side rear peg and a small amount of aluminum sheet

Here's how I mounted Shirley's solo seat; welded two tabs to the oval washer securing the tank for my hinge, made a bracket to bolt to the rear seat mounts, and welded two more tabs to the frame for the bracket to lock and bolt into. Tail light & plate tucked under the duckbill fender. Disregard my sloppy welding skills.

Get a photobucket account, upload the photos, then use the photo tool when you post. Easy amigo!

I bought a seat pan off ebay ($35) welded two tabs onto the frame and bent a large door hinge to mount to the bottom. Mine was slightly different in that I welded the tabs on the lower frame bar so my springer seat actually sits "in" the bike a bit.
