    I wish I could get my hands on a CB550. That looks like it will be a fun project.

    Luv the FJ....bout the same shape as my Seca when I brought it home. ..... 8O

    At least it was left to rest ( rust) in a shed....all mine had was a oak tree & part of an open garage door....

    With a new Trumpet and a Guzzi to throw a leg over I can see where the shed could not have the door opened for a while.......Should be interesting to see where this goes

    Of course the parts buzzard in me made this thread catch my eye... :roll:

    If you wanna get rid of that 550, I have a couple of CB's I'm working on and could use an engine for my CB500. I'm itching to build a 605cc for it!

    So.....any tips to get the bar-end weights off?

    I have an impact hammer, and an 8mm impact hex socket. NOTHING budging. heat? pray to the gods? Anyone?

    You put it in a big wooden box with "Markie, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England" written on the top!!

    I wonder if you put stillsons (With some emery cloth wrapped around the bar end to stop the stillsons cutting into the metal) on the bar end and turn

    Stillsons = self gripping adjustable wrench, used for pipe assembley.

    Well....I did get one of the end-weights off on the throttle side...and immediately bought replacements weights off of eBay, since I chewed them up so bad. I also picked up a L/H handlebar while I was there because nothing is budging the other side, and really, this was the cheapest alternative.

    Chipping away at the stuff that will make it a solid runner, and stopper. the rest is just decoration, although I am looking forward to putting the new-to-me fairing on and side-covers. She'll always look a little rough around the edges, but I don't think I'd have it any other way.

    I think most of our bikes are at least a bit rough around the edges (except for fitz :D ). I know mine are. But hey, they are 30+years old.

    Mine have warts too, trust me. But I won't destroy the irreplaceable original graphics for a much needed repaint. Mechanically, however: better than stock.

    QUIT RIDING IT UNTIL YOU REBUILD THE BRAKES! Believe me, I know how tempting it is.

    And make sure the motor won't self destruct. You have some neglected maintenance to deal with, don't jump the gun.

    That being said, I'm glad to see another chain-driven XJ back on the road. Speaking of which, replace the chain (and sprockets) before that internally-rusted chain breaks, wraps back around and rips the starter out of the engine cases, breaking the castings. It's happened, don't let it happen to you. Once a chain has rusted inside, and compromised the bearing surfaces of the pins (which you cannot see) it's a recipe for disaster and can/will fail unexpectedly. REPLACE (with sprockets.)

    Might want to think about wheel bearings too, while the wheels are off for the sprockets and new tires.

    Congrats on getting it running. It's a relatively rare bird too.

    Would anyone have a clue as to WHY I have, what I'll call, an intermittent starter motor? Sometimes the bike cranks, sometimes it doesn't. Starter relay sounds like its doing its thing, and all other parameters (bike in neutral, start switch on, key turned) are accounted for. Is there an optimal voltage I need to keep charging into the battery? Does the old-school "hit the starter motor with a hammer" trick apply here? Just curious.

    I had this kind of trouble with my Goldwing, I think it has something to do with the windings and the brushes, something like a dead spot somewhere in the starter. I had it rebuilt in a shop close to my place and it cured the problem

    Hey! I have an FJ1200, and I had an intermittent starter button. The culprit ended up almost certainly being the "master relay" device that handles all the safety switch inputs.

    I bypassed mine by soldering a wire to bypass the ground wire out of it to the solenoid directly--only side effect is I killed some of the safety switches' functionality and hitting the starter button without a key will spin the starter (but not turn on the bike, as no spark without key).

    A replacement relay device can be found on ebay, and there are some from other Yamaha models that interchange with mine--probably same for you.

    Important diagnosis point:

    Have you tried shorting all safety switches?

    Are you always able to push-start it?
