Hey everyone. I'm returning to riding after a 3 year "dry spell", expired m2 canadian license and I'm noticing that I'm getting rediclous quotes for between $1400 and $2300. I vaguely remember this being under a grad 3 years ago.

How much r u paying and with whom? Preferably people from Ontario.

    It's an 85 xj700n

I'm in Nova Scotia, got my license 3 years ago, and I only bay $212 for the whole year. over a grand seems awfully high for a 20 year old bike

Used to be with these guys http://www.primmum.com/en/home at around $400 for the year , changed to Economical about 3 years ago because they changed their policies and were able to sneak my bike in with both cars and the house , still $400 . The link above will give you a quote and they are in T.O.
If it matters I'm 37 , married , accident and ticket free

Ace, I'm with Cluett in Burnside - I used to pay about what you did for the 650 maxim. Currently at Cluett I pay about 200 for the year for the CBR.

I've had my (motorcycle) licence for 3 years, I have 4 speeding tickets and an accident on my record.
And I'm paying $300 a year with Cal Legrow, but I only have $250,000 public liability.

My car insurance on the other hand...

I have a totally clean license (no tickets or accidents) and I pay around 120/year through Progressive. I don't carry full-coverage though.

One thing I noticed with Progressive is that they ask what you use your bike for. I think the categories are parade, commuting, and pleasure or something like that. Since I use my bike to mostly commute I thought at first they'd charge me a higher rate being that I ride more often than if I just used it occasionally so I clicked "pleasure" and the rates were ridiculously high. If you list as "commute" it's way less expensive. Can't say I've figured out why other than maybe they consider "pleasure" racing or that they just assume if you've got a bike just for your own entertainment you must have enough income to pay them more money?

It depends on how much liability you have and what coverage.

    500,000, 1M or 2M liability?
Comprehensive or the minimum required by Ontario Law
Did you sign up for all the "injury insurance" they offer?

I have 1M, minimum required by law and nothing else and I pay 850 a year for my 82 Seca. I have 1 speeding ticket from 2 years ago and 1 accident from 5.5 years ago (b*st*rds still count it!!!).

This rate is with my long time house, 2 cars insurance so I think they gave me a break because of history. I was getting quotes for 1300 to 1600 before that. I also have an M2 license.

Expect that rate to fall when you get an M and have at least 3 years CONTINUOUS insured riding experience.

I'm in Alberta, I don't have my licence, I have to take a course to get insurance through my company, and it will be $220/year. The big thing is its with no theft/fire insurance, only liability, its too easy to steal a bike, so theft and fire are ridiculous, as is the deductable. I can get insurance through another place which doesn't require a course, or my licence for that matter, and its only $350/year.

Only bike with complete coverage is my V-Rod,my '72 Norton Commando and my '86 XJ700X just have liability 100/300/50. I pay $102 a year on the XJ.
    Depends where you live.

I only have liability insurance on my 81 XJ750
20,000/40,000/15,000 for bodily injury person/accident and property damage
My policy is with Dairyland which i get through my local agent.
My total cost for the entire year is $46.00 !
Nothing special here, no accidents or tickets and i'm 38 years old so i don't know why it's so low.

Also i'm looking at buying a new bike and here's a quote i got for it:

Here is a copy of your GEICO® Motorcycle Insurance quote.

Your total premium is $112.00 for 12 month policy.

Click here to BUY this policy ONLINE. It is easy to start your policy right at our Web site.

The details of the coverages and premiums for 2006 KAWASAKI EX650A6F Ninja 650R are:

    Bodily Injury Liability(BI) --- $20,000 / $40,000 --- $66.00
    Property Damage Liability(PD) --- $15,000 --- $45.00
    Medical Payments(MED) --- NO --- $
    Personal Injury Protection(PIP) --- NO --- $
    Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury(UMBI) --- I decline this coverage --- $0.00
    Uninsured Motorist Property Damage(UMPD) --- NO --- $0.00
    Comprehensive(COMP) --- NO --- $
    Collision(COLL) --- NO --- $
    Towing(TOW) --- NO --- $

And i guess on another note, my auto insurance for the same limits of liability only cost me about $300/yr

I have a clean record and pay $208/year (full year) through Geico. This is for slightly more than minimum liability, plus theft. (No collision)

Thanks Guys I called a broker and apparently choosing commute instead of pleasure lowers your rate. Something about it being less risky because you are constantly using your skills.

There are minimum coverage rules in ontario and the new rates I'm looking at are between $422 and $714. For the maxim.

Still rediclous that the roadstar that has more coverage is $666.

Also these quotes are for year round coverage.

I use Progressive too. They were by far the lowest price. $234 w/medical.

I live in the insurance-hell province of Ontario. I'm paying about $1400/year for my '82 650 Maxim including theft and with a perfectly clean record. You want to know how bad things are out here? I'm 21 years old and I was jumping for joy when I found I ONLY have to pay a little over $3000 to insure my '04 Pontiac Sunfire for the year (as opposed to $4000 last year and $6000 the year before). This is with a clean record and are the lowest rates around because I get significant family discounts through The Co-operators. I had a friend who once payed $7000 to insure a Suzuki Sidekick for a year (one speeding ticket).

And just for comparison my Uncle who also has a clean record and is 54 years old is paying $1400/year for his '97 Harley Sportster 1200.

I dare anyone to pick out worse insurance rates than Ontario has elseware. Its absolutely criminal.

Anyone who doesn't believe me can check out Kanetix.ca

Most older people honestly think I'm full of shit when I tell them how much insurance costs for a lad my age.

I shudder to think what a 17 year old male pays these days.

I have Allstate who uses some other ins company to underwrite bikes.

Today I tried Progressive and found that I can get the same coverage for 148.50 yr as opposed to 305.00 yr for basic minimal liability coverage

Guess what.... I called my ins man and they said see ya later.
Guess I'll miss that ins man.
Thats what he gets for rapeing me!

He has had me so ins poor for so long....glad to see him go!!

That's very good. I used to be from Ohio and thought it was as screwed up as Michigan.

When I got on the phone with the Progressive guy he started offering all kinds of coverage besides the basic liability. I asked him how much (I already had the web quote). Turns out Michigan has a $225 minimum, so I was able to add a whole bunch of coverage and only go over the minimum by $9. All part of our "No Fault" nanny state.
