I believe the XJ750 Seca/Maxim frames are very, very similar (possibly different side panel mounting points). The tanks directly interchange; the seats/side panels do not. Both have leading-axle front forks (not real cafe-looking). I guess it depends how much of a purist you are (but that would require a British twin, not a Japanese 4 :p ). Can't say about the XJ550/650 but I do know that the Maxims for both have leading-axle forks and the XJ650 Seca has those cool knee indentations and flat tank/seat base that look OEM cafe to me.

I'm no expert but I was told as well that the tanks are a direct swap.

I was originally going the bobber route but decided to go cafe/fighter/bobber. WE'll see how it turns out, but I've been looking for a good seca tank. If I good seca tank. If I get my hands on one soon, I'll post pics, etc.

In all 3 displacements that both models were offered in, the frames ARE different. They're very different when it comes to the 550 and 650s; the 750s are the most similar between Seca and Max.

Generally speaking, the Maxim frames sweep down toward the seat/rear; while the Secas tend to be more level.

Yes but I was told that all 3 frames have the same style under the tank, meaning the 1 to 3 pipes/rails. I could be wrong, and if necessary, I'll just modify it.

Exactly what Fitz said, although that doesn't mean the Maxims can't be cafe'd. I did just the very thing with mine and it turned out rather nicely. The trick is to work with that dip in the frame in the seating area, and alter your rake, through adjusting your forks through the trees and slightly (SLIGHTLY!) longer rear shocks. Can't go silly with jacking the rear, as you will throw the driveshaft geomtery off, and prematurely wear your u-joints.

Anyway, here's mine. hope this helps you envision things:

    Thanks.

I had just sprayed the tires with some of that foaming tire stuff prior to taking the pics, that's all.

NEVER use tire shine/foam/dressing products on your tires.

On the Do The Ton forums, there is a member, Durgam K. He makes them. He has threads up in the For Sale section, there.

a better thing to put on sidewalls is liquid floor wax, it lasts longer and it's safer

Whow! What a cool re-design to say the least. That looks like a 750 XJ Seca tank on there is it and where did you get those emblems on it? Those really set that Black tank off to say the least. Heck, I think that looks better than it did new. Keep up the good work Buddy, I think your SMOKIN TO SAY THE LEAST! GRUNT007, 81' XJ750 Seca R, Mi.

You'd have to check with a Do The Ton member by the name of Durgam K. He makes these rear sets.

Thank for the kind words, Grunt. Those decals were something that I custom designed in Photoshop. I then sent the digital file to an online printhouse. They cut them to shape and everything for me. didn't even have to cut off the extra material. After that, I clearcoated the tank with Spraymax 2K clear. It is a 2-part clear, but comes in a spray can. Best paint bombs I've ever used and protects the tank from gas spills, quite nicely!

Maxim-X, no those rear sets aren't mounted to the swingarm. Just the shot. I retained the passenger footpeg brackets to give them something to mount to. I fashioned the aluminum plates behind the sets, because the brackets are empty in the center, and that was exactly where I needed to optimally place the rear sets.
