Well do to this bord being about modifications and all the talke of bigger tire's more HP and fabing seat's saddel bags and so forth i figure being new and all i would like to know what outher people have done to their bike.

With that said let's not make a Story outta it. Try to keep it simple not how you did it just what you have changed Example saddel bag's Led's for brake lights or waring lights or even engine accents and so forth. not well i cut here put this there just what you have done.

I guess if some one els want's to do it to theay can message you about it i do bleave that the message thing works i guess i havent tryed it but im sure it dose.

A short extra bit of info is Ok to explain what you did just dont make a phara graph on it please.

A small list of what you have planed to have done would be nice to i guess since i just got the bike and some of my list was done but there is more to be done (when reading my list dont say well that's impractil or cant be done) this is for what you have done or have plans

My 82 maxim 750 came like this
    jetted up
    camed
    seca wind shild
    lether saddel bags

My 82 maxim 750 list to be done next winter
    Put bigger head's on
    bigger exhust valv's
Single air filter for each carb in a air box simular to what's their now
forced induction per hypercharger (ram air)
Re-paint metalic black with gold flaks
Semi-hidden push in ciggratte lighter (65mph and zippo dont work)

    P.S. happy posting

Strangely enough, all I've done to my bike has been UNmodify it. I've taken off the sissy bar, bags, windshield and highway pegs the last owner added, and will probably take off the added headlight visor as well. Then I'll decide what I want to do with it!

Jazzmoose, You wouldn't by chance want to part with your sissy bar would you?
    Been looking one.

iwasatoad, why do you want to put a bigger head on your engine?

bigger valves? easier breathing? because if you put a bigger head on that engine, you are reducing the compression, reducing the efficiency and possibly robbing HP from the bike. I would think long and hard before doing that, consider over boring the cylinders instead??

Brian i have thought about what you said and you are 100% correct in you reply i would loose compression if not up grading any thing els by changing the head i loost pressure but creat more room inside for more Air/fule and since i will be putting forced induction on this bike that will help get the pressure up there when moving but will make for a little more ruffer idle were it will sound like it's stalling.

In this i will haf to also check to see what kind of back pressure i will be getting to see weather or not to make a more straight line exaust or put some blockage in it.

(intreasting fact on a episode of dream car garage a guy had a 32 coupe with a 350 getting 1:1 compression with 1000hp and 1mpg highway but it also had 1700lb\ft/tq) i hope that's understandible

P.s. the added air fule when under the presser per square inch will be smaller with the bigger head untill it ignites then it would be the same as if not more pressure than before.

Quick experment to help explain what i mean by this get a some fire crackers and longer fuses mind you so not to injure your self and syspend 1 fire cracker in the center of a 20oz pop bottel lite the fuse and close the lid tight when it gose off you would have built pressure in the bottel and more than likely blowen a hole in it, lets say that's the stock xj750. now put 2 firecrackers in anouther 20oz pop bottel light the fuses and put the cap on tight like before. Common since the pressure will proebely be double what it was before due to more expanding of the gasses ( the powder burnig) that would be simular to jetting up a xj750 with some added air to help burn the fule if you can get enougfh air to burn all the full you can put in there wich as stated all redy you can put more fule in there than what you can get the air to burn.

my fix for this the 24oz pop bottel a 750 with a bigger head creating more room for air and fule but rember we controle how much of what gose in so now take 2 fire crackers and put them in the 24oz bottel light the fuse and close the lid tight. you will of created less pressure in the bottel like what you are stating but now what if i forced more air in with the fule before i closed the lid the pressure would of all redy been increased wich i could do in the 750 with stock head but i would not have as much volume to fill with fule and air so bigger head means i can put even more fule and even more air in. and will alow the engine to breath easyer witch will in return make a nice throughty rumble in exaust.

Now with that said i hope i dont question any ones knolage but i did the same thing to my 3.1 camaro 5 years ago put bigger head's on forced induction and pushed more fule in and went from 135hp to 300hp. i dont think i see that much of an increase on the bike but im sure i will gain at leaset anouther 20 to 50% more power when tuned right ( witch could take a wile with no more than a O2 sensor carb syncer and paper and pen but i guess only whay to know for sure is when i get it done witch wont be till winter but it's worth the wait for me to do the equaisons now to make sure i get it purtty close to perfect before i get in finished

silly analogies aside i see what your saying, But if you got forced induction, AND kept compression the same, you would be that much better off. But if thats what your looking for, go for it. I bet your right about htat exhaust note. Sounds like you've atleast thought this through, which is good to hear.

And your example about a 1:1 compression, that would mean there is no compression, as in the piston isnt moving, the engine would not function, becasue it wouldnt be turning. did you mean 10:1?

iwasatoad, I didn't read your entire post because it makes my head hurt.

Just wanted to add that ram air is not forced induction...

You guys are soooo funny, I caught the 1:1 too and couldn't reason out how the motor would sustain combustion either. I settled on a typo too. 10:1 with ram air wouldn't be too much of a stretch for the XJ, should be pretty sane. Stock is 9.2:1, so a head shave wouldn't be too bad, just don't forget to readjust the cam chain tensioner. Toad, how were you getting your induction? If you plumbed the air flow from the front of the machine with piping, it would be a ram air. Super chargers and turbos (both very expensive routes) are forced type inductions. With ram, 10:1 wouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't monkey with the compression if you were adding a turbo or charger, you would need to beef up the whole lower end and oil delivery system for that ratio. If your dreaming of this mod, get ready to spend some dough. Good luck!

sorry for the long and now that i re read it kind pointless explaniation here are the fixe's as when i typed it i just got off 12hrs of work and was tired the 1:1 was a typo but more in the since that not 10:1 but found the magizne at my dad's and re-red it it was 2:1 and unherd of because of it's uneffichency (not sure i spelt that right)

For the forced induction ram air would be forced induction when moving down the road but not at a stand still. I know turbo and super and blower\hyper chargers are what people consider forced induction but any air being pushed into the motor not being sucked in by the vacume force would thus be forced into. All though Ram air would be a good turm to use to ram air is forced induction (begg to differ ill get the dictionary out and post the deffinition's on here. Not trying to upset any one or any thing but it would be forced as i explained.

Sorry if i type long and boring topic's i guess im good for that and i have an example for every thing if you want that but i guess the last one i put up board more that it was worth to read so ill just start using this sight for somting just to read when im board i guess because i hate to haf to be questioned on my knolage happy riding and hope to see some XJ's on the road

well i guess since ill stop posting ill prove my point here so you all know that im not just some punk kind thinking he know's it all because i dont know it all i just have a plethera of knolage and sources ill post this here

    Link one (Induction) Definition:
    http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=induction

look for the word:entrance or taking in

    Link Two (forced) Definition:
    http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=Forced

look for the word: Unwilling or mandatory

or to put them to gather here it is simpler to save the effort

Mandatorly taking in = Requested into
    mandatory entrance = Requested into
unwilling entrance = Forced into by acting force
    or even
taking in unwilling = not asking for but getting

well with that said happy tearing into this post as it will be my last

iwasatoad, sorry to hear that you won't post due to some comments.
What your trying to do in your posts is beyond my willingness to even try, but it is still interesting to read about. What people do to their bikes is all about the $$$, time, and knowlege available to each person doing the rebuild, repair, or modification. Everyone has an opinion and comment, some good, some not so good, but it shouldn't stop that one thing we all enjoy " Freedom of Speech "
Just my 2 cents worth, good luck in your mods!

iwasatoad - I'm interested... ram air must be a bit tricky to control on a non-fuel injected bike. I mean at a certain throttle opening at slow speed the air would harder to get - tend to run rich - and at the same throttle opening at high speed you'd think it would tend to run lean. Was this a problem and how did you deal with it?

We've had a bit of this discussion with regards to the 250 engine - and because it is so small an engine no one seems to have solved the complexity cost vs the small gain... on a larger engine this balance point is different so it'd be interesting to see how the project went for you...

Must be a popular item; you're the second person to ask! No, at this point I'm going to hang on to it, as I might want to put it back on. If I do decide to part with it, though, I'll offer it here on the board rather than on eBay. With all the mechanical advice I'm asking for here, I figure it's the right thing to do!

iwasatoad, I hope you're not referencing my post as to why you're not going to post anymore. I enjoy a good discussion as most people do, I just like to get to the bottom of things. Sorry if I stepped on any toes, it definetly was not my intention. My comment about my head hurting was mainly due to the lack of punctuation. I might be a little bit picky, but it makes it a whole lot easier to read. So, please don't be offended by what I say, sometimes things come out differently over the net than they would person-to-person.

Also, I still stand by my statement that Ram Air is indeed not forced induction. To have forced induction is to introduce compressed air into the cylinders (i.e. a turbo or supercharger). A ram air is simply speeding up the air velocity where it enters the airbox. You may get a cooler charge, which will be somewhat denser, but it won't be compressed. I definetly wouldn't give up any compression ratio depending on ram air to make up for the difference.

Iwasatoad, I'm greatly saddened to hear of your decision. I'll second Nick's comments. Your questions and comments invited a great deal of discussion and discourse. These are one of the principal aims of this forum. You were contributing to the overall knowledge of our collective group. Our loss as well as yours. I'll buy off that ram air has some inherant performance improvements, but one has to be at speed and the intake aligned into an unturbulent air source for the process to be useful. There is just not enough pressure increase to be of much use below a certain speed. Additional filtration for the air would be necessary as well to make up for the increased volume. I'd like to see what you have done as well as how well it worked! Hurry back!

hey i know it worked on chevelles, camaro and nova's (cowl hoods ) but like stated the gain is more from the cool air than the force of it coming into the carb or carbs.
