North-East XJ-Riders ... Let's cash-in on this C-R-A-Z-Y weather and zoom to someplace, around here, for a day trip. The weatherman says it could be near 60-degrees this weekend.

I rode today! I cannot believe we still have some non-frozen-butt and clean, dry-road riding happening, a week after New Year's.

I'll set-up Base Camp if there's enough interest!

Hey Rick, I am new here. Have an 80 650 Maxim I read your detailed artical on carb rebuild and learned stuff that I thought I knew. I rebuilt the top end after noteing oil comsumption and also cleaned the carbs I thought. That is till I read your depiction of how it should be done. I have always had a cold start problem. ( I bought this bike new in fall of 1979) It takes at least 10 to 15 revolutions to fart and depending on temp, this repeats 5-6 times before a couple of cyls to fire off. Cannot crack throttle until all fire or will immed. die. Once warm, no issue.
I never bothered with enrichment tubes ( I want to say choke) when seasonal cleanouts were preformed.
I just removed the carbs from bike. If the boots are warm ,it takes me no more than 5 minutes to do this because of all the On The Job Training thru the years. Pulled the rod and forks and noticed adjust screws next to tubes. They bottomed out at approx 7 to 8 full turns. My question is 1. How do I adjust and 2 Are they critical. Again hanks for your impressive artical and please educate me on this stuff

    Wow.
That's interesting. That far OUT meant you were running seriously rich at idle.

Bottom those screws (Pilot Mixture Screws) all the DOWN ... easy!
    Factory = 2.5 Out.
Factory set-up has proved to be Lean by many who have ColorTuned for performance.

Try an initial setting of splitting the difference between 2.75 and 3.0 Turns OUT and see how she runs.

Micro-tweak for best idle until you can Colortune.
Adjust each screw for best idle.
Micro-adjust screw out listening to idle. If idle improves continue outward tweak to point where no further improvement is attained.
    Same for 2, 3 and 4.

Tweaking will put you in the Ballpark.
ColorTuning will put you right smack-dab on Home Plate.

And here I thought a Nutcase wanted to go a weekend ride!!!

    Tune it up.
    Lemme Know.
    We'll dial you in!

Rick, Thanks for info. Its 76 here today and my carbs are on kitchen table  Hey would the Pilot Mixture screw setting affect cold start up. Or is there another issue? Plungers looked a littel dirty and I steel wooled them to a brass glow. Would like to fix that problem before reinstalling.
