Converting to electric speedometer?

So I've been looking into some options for the build I'm planning this winter. One of the things I'd like to do is change gauges. The ones I'm looking at are electronic, which would mean converting the speedometer. If I'm not mistaken the tach is already electric on my xj1100 right?

My question is, has anyone thought of and/or tried something like this? It looks super simple, and I could build this with no problems, but I'm not sure I understand what the reed switch is picking up on for the signal? Is this something I could pull off on my bike? Thoughts? Suggestions? Comments?

Most aftermarket gauges come with the sensor. Normally you put small magnets in the cap screw heads to trigger with.

What if I wasn't going to use aftermarket gauges? I could I suppose, but the ones I was looking at are off a 98 Honda Valkyrie. I really like the looks of these. Here's a shot from the front to show the look I'm going for with the gauges and light. Very sleek, and not to flashy. I'll use a different headlight, but I like those gauges.

If you dont use an aftermarket unit, you may find it difficult to calibrate. Most aftermarket units are adjustable to match how many pulses and different tyre diameters. Most factory ones will not be adjustable.

I would be researching exactly what (and how many) pulses the unit you intend fitting needs, before buying it.

Good to know, I may be better off finding something similar that's aftermarket.

Just want to echo what was said before. Most aftermarkets are calibrated to the speed sensor they send. I bought and installed the Trailtech Vapor and install was a breeze, it works and looks fantastic. They have awesome customer service too. Just my .02

Thanks guys. I will keep that in mind. The trailtech vapor gauges are nice, but not the style I'm looking for, but I will probably go aftermarket, it seems like that would be the best route.
