Got the swingarm and frame painted today. I wanted to use a textured paint mainly for durability. It came out pretty good. Its a dark graphite in color.

little progress on the tank. Got first coat of bondo sanded and finish coat applied. I'll sand it tomorrow and hopefully have it in primer so it wont start to rust. Anyone have any ideas on resealing the tank, i was debating on it?

after first coat: you can still see some dings and nicks
    [IMG]

after second coat applied. I think i got it covered pretty good.

got the seat cut down to use the original seat pan as a temporary seat. It was seated to make sure it would fit with fender on rear. Also taped the frame to make sure it wouldn't rub the paint off.

Taped off the important parts and got the motor ready for a good scrubbing and possibly some paint.

Look how bad the front sprocket casing was....ew
    [IMG]

Was cleaning the motor then got completely side tracked when this monster bug popped out. In the 22 years ive been in Ohio, ive never seen one of these. Its like prehistoric lol

Not too much progress today as im waiting for my valve clearance tool. figured it would be easier to do it with the motor out.

anyways, i got the engine cleaned and painted (except for stator and clutch covers). I dont think it'll look that bad when its all done

awesome, i'm the same build. Can't wait to get them on and check out the stance. I'm still tossed on if i go all black wheels, or black/polished lip. The sooner i can figure that out, the sooner i can get the rear put back together

I got them for a universal fit for any year sportster. the kit comes with 6 pairs of eyelet washers which are all different sizes. You use which ever ones are the snuggest fit.

    :)

    hope that helps.

I saw a pair of those. Couldn't justify buying shocks that cost 1/4 of my bike though!! haha my rebels i just bought were a good deal. They are some slick looking slammers though. love em.

i had a few drinks and it made them look a little more appealing before i clicked "purchase" lol. Its worth it, i figured the original shocks were 30 years old so it was time for some new ones ( that was my way of talking myself into it lol)

    Re: **Brute Bobb Build***

after getting my shocks i figured it was time to get my but in gear and get the rear end finished, so i can atleast see what the shocks will look like. So started re-doing the rear wheel and brake cover.

Let me start by saying WEAR GLOVES!!! The airplane stripper i used is SO corrosive its crazy. I ended up changing my gloves 6 times, before and after i applied the stripper. It ends up eating through the gloves so you have to change them.

    Anyways here it went...

After i brushed and washed off wheel.

When wheel was dry i hit it with a coat of Reformer. Tomorrow I will sand it and hit it with paint

wheel cover got scuffed up, degreased, and hit with reformer. After the reformer dried it got sanded and a coat of filler primer. Tomorrow it gets paint as well and then hopefully....hopefully the rear end will go on!!!

What are everyones opinions on this battery. it was pretty low on fluid and had a pretty low charge when on the bike. When i checked the fluid they are all either right at the low line or under it. Should i just fill it (DI water or ACID) and charge it, or just get a new one? Thanks in advance

It makes this project a bit more fun knowing that there is good people following and adding in on the build!

When the rear rim and brake shoe cover were fully dry i hit them with some paint (semi gloss) which came out pretty slick ;)

    Now some real progress!!!

I'm also a lube junky and always load up the axle and swingarm bolt (along with other moving parts) seemingly out of habit. I think its good practice. I treat them like a caliper bolt. I first degrease them with brake clean, then scuff up a bit with sandpaper, and finish off with a good bit of grease :)

    anyways, back to the fun....

Got rear wheel and chain mounted

AND WITHOUT FURTHER ADO! The Slammers are mounted :D
*note* -it started raining so i had to move inside :(

If anyone is interested I saved pictures of how to make sportster shocks (Burly Slammers) fit your maxim. I could make a thread with a step-by-step on how to do it. Keep in mind i didn't weld anything, just modified old mounts and made some tape shims

    Burly Slammer Installation:

Start off un-boxing your nice new shocks (YAY)

Make sure you have everything because i didn't see the eyelet washers when i first opened the box.

This is what the eyelet washers look like
    [IMG]

Start by using a flathead screwdriver to pry back the shock mount. dont go too crazy
    [IMG]

Size up the opening just enough to fit the eyelet washer in it
    [IMG]

using a rubber mallet, tap the eyelet down until its roughly in line with the factory bolt hole.

I used a drill with a 5/8" bit to shave the hole out a little. (focus on the top of the hole because as you push the shock mount out, the bolt hole drops down in relation to the threaded hole)

keep checking the hole to see if it lines up and threads in. Go slow, you want as much "meat" left on the factory mounts as you can
    [IMG]

then tighten the bolt WITH the eyelet washer in between. This will pull the factory mount back in and clean it up.

Now remove the washer and put it in a vice or vice grips (what i used) and grind the head down like so. This gives you the clearance of the rubber grommets on the shock itself. Grind it down then put it back into the shock....after it cools of course

I used a little electrical tape as a shim until i get some metal shims (the stock bolt is thinner than the eyelet washer). Also, the top mounts on the shock won't use the eyelet washers. The factory mounts are too thick. Instead just shim it again with some tape to temporarily make sure they fit. (get correct shims/make them before riding)

Once you get it all together, lubricate the bolts, washers, and shock openings, and VOILA!

Well, i promised everyone id add some pictures of it sitting outside so you can get some perception of the shocks. Here ya go :)

*yes i know, i need to take off that frame stand....its hideous

as of right now, im just finishing up some small projects like repainting the starter, painting and installing rear fender, resanding down bondo on the tank, and waiting for my feeler gauge and valve tool from amazon. until then im kinda just waiting around. :(

Wrapping shock mounting bolts with electrical tape to "shim" them is mechanical blasphemy.

Shenanigans is more like it. Please don't advise others to do the same.

    BAD IDEA.

Are you thinking of lowering the front too? I'm not sure what a proper procedure would be to do that. I've heard of progressive springs in the front? Or simply cutting them down...I'm not willing to try any of that yet, but for the sake of the stance it would look pretty cool.
