I have an '82 Seca 750 that seems 100%. I have had similar era bikes in the past though that never seemed to want to charge the battery right. My GS Suzuki's all needed either a stator or Regulator/rectifier. My XS650 never charged the battery so it was a short trip/battery charger type of ride. Is the system on the XJ750 good? I have a new battery, the bike has good clean connections all the way through and it's been well maintained with 27,XXX miles on it. Is it good to take on a long trip?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scotty
    P.S. I paid $350 for this bike!

Just check the alternator brushes. If you can't see the "wear indicator lines" cut into them, it's time to replace them. While you're in there you can clean up the rotor a bit.

Before taking a trip; when were the valve clearances last checked? The recommended interval is every 5000 miles after the initial check at 3K. If you don't have direct knowledge or solid proof, CHECK THEM.

Also, tire age? Brake line age? (mfg date stamped in lines.)

And have you pulled the rear wheel yet to check for signs of brake shoe delamination? You HAVE TO LOOK, you cannot tell by feel or how well it works. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html This is very common and it doesn't matter how well the bike was cared for, just how old the shoes are.

Pulled the rear wheel today, awesome breaks, clean grease on the splines, good to go. This thing is amazing for what I paid for it.
I also got the two good manuals with it and check out this poster, I think it was in the factory manual
