Hello all. New guy here with my very first bike. I just got an 82 550 Maxim a week ago for $500. Love the bike so far! I have been fixing some of the minor things like the idle, brakes, and clutch cable thanks to the info here on the site. Thank you very much.

The next issue to address is the exhaust. It is extremely loud. It looks like the mufflers have rusted out. I have the 2 into 1 and I am looking for a quiet setup. I have seen a great number of systems for sale, but I have no idea which are the quieter ones and which are louder. Any suggestions?

I have also seen some references to repacking the mufflers. Any validity to this?

    Thank you.

Good advice, especially on the 550. The collector box is a big part of the 550s performance "magic" as long as you have the stock head pipes and collector box, you can pretty much use the mufflers of your choice.

I would also check the 2 into 1 manifold for cracks ect.

Mine is a 750 w/ a 4 into 2, but once it started going out it made a very, very noticable difference in sound. Luckily I had access to a welder so I cut it apart and "rebuilt" it, but worth checking while you are at it.

I was too embarrassed to drive it for over a month before I got it fixed, so it can make a big difference in the sound quality if it is in pretty bad shape.

Thanks for the advice. It looks like I have the stock exhaust on it but it's in pretty bad shape. Definitely need a new one or the neighbors will kill me. Thanks for the link to the e-bay listing. That is a great price.

This is my first foray into the cycle world, but I have owned Volvos for years and have found the online forums to be the best source of information and help. This XJ forum is proving to be the same. Great site and I am sure I will be a frequent visitor.

    Thanks again

    John
