Hello all, I'm David. I got a new/old bike, it's a 82 Yamaha XJ650j with a 82 Yamaha XJ750rj motor. It was my brothers bike, he passed away from cancer when I was only 8. I still remember when it was all original. Before he got sick, he bought a motor with the wires harness, TCI box, and cluster. He passed just after it was done. He got to hear run but, couldn't ride it, My old sister then got the bike and had it running for 15years. Then one day it wouldn't fire at the plugs, so she messed with it for a while. Then she wrapped it up and boxed up the parts and let it sit for 5years. 3years in a garage and 2 outside, which started to bother me. So I started asking her for the bike, the shop I work at builds and restores cars and motorcycles I told her. After some time she finally gave me the bike and it may be a long rebuild. But, she really let our brothers bike waste way with time. I still believe there is hope for it, the motors not locked up, need to check valve clearance and crabs need a good cleaning maybe a rebuild and re-syncing, still need to get it to fire. I got an extra 5G2-10 TCI for backup. so will see what happens. Will try to post pics when I can.

    Welcome aboard David

I could think of no better reason to bring the bike back to good health. You will find that there is almost nothing that is unfixable with time and resources.

There are three main areas to look at for your no spark issue.

Fuse block, and wiring: Know to go bad on these bikes. replacement with an updated modern blade style fuse block will cure a lot of electrical problems. Checking and cleaning wiring connections to eliminate shorts cause by corrosion from weather exposure.

Coils: Over time these will develop problems from heat and exposure.
Replacements/ upgrades available to correct this.

TCI: Generally reliable unless abused. Make sure you unplug the TCI whenever you work on the motor without having it start (Compression Test).
Diodes are know to be an issue with these. I believe Robert rebuilds them.

Parts are available through XJ4ever. Chacal is a supporting vender, and resident parts expert. You will locate his catalog by clicking on the XJ4ever banner at the top to every page.

Welcome, sounds like you have your work cut out for you. However, there are a lot of people here who really know their stuff and are willing to lend a hand. One thing I would suggest please fill out the signature part of your profile with bike info. So that at a glance when you post a question people will know what you have.

Good luck with your resurrection and I hope you get it running again!
