I'm not familiar with those, but I drilled a 5 hole pattern in my old Seca 750 similar to what your rivets look like, but the Seca sealed the inner baffle to the end housing. If you have those rivets, I'm guessing your baffle is mounted to those, and I don't think you want to drill the rivets out, or I'm thinking your whole baffle system is going to slide out the back and you'll be stuck with a straight pipe that will be quite loud.
Drilling mine out gave it a nice sound a little louder and touch more power.

I would wait til someone chimes in that has those exact pipes to confirm, but I think you'd want to drill inbetween the rivets.

I'll place my money on a PO drilling holes in the pipe, then decided to close them off with POP rivets.

Your exhaust is as Yamaha manufactured it. The rivets are stock, not a band-aid for a cob job. Have you priced USED oem mufflers for this bike? I would be inclined to leave well enough alone. I had a 1985 Maxim X that I bought new,and the mufflers were still intact and looking good after 44,000 + miles. If you still want more sound, save your pennies for some slip-ons. Original parts are hard to come by,especially for the "X",which was only marketed in the United States for 2 years.

Those look like my stock Vmax pipes. Try this link. http://www.jerrynovak.com/vmax/exhaust.htm

I don't suggest trying it though, you will probably be dissapointed, and in the process ruin your stock exhaust.

I'm putting 5-Dollars down on ... He drills 'em out anyway; despite their high value as near Un-obtainium!

I'm going to suggest you leave them alone, they are where they are supposed to be and you could possibly end up with a baffle dropping into and possibly blocking your exhaust exit. I'm not up on the internals of these mufflers but I don't think it is a risk worth taking.

I drilled out the rivets similar to those, on one of my bikes years ago (can't remember which one - it's an old age thing) it just loosens the the baffle inside and rattles around and a PITA to get out. take the others advice and leave 'em stock or get some slip ons(if ya want to hear what it would sound like, take the muffler off and drive it around - but the magaphone effect if ya take the baffles out of the muffler will be even louder) .
Remember when ya "open" up the exhaust - ya need to rejet the carbs, or burned pistons may result.

These bike's don't sound all that good with loud pipes on. I've tried experimenting with the sound of all types of baffles and pipe configurations and loud is just annoying. If you have a good stock system, your better off keeping them intact and using an aftermarket pair of mufflers. There are tons of mufflers that will slip right onto your header pipes for sale on Ebay. I've bought entire exhaust systems for as little as $30, brand spankin' new and still in the box. Just my opinion.

I'd be delighted to do just that.

What are we doing about the front-end of that Magic-carpet of yours. We got the Fork Seals done; yet?
