Does your current petcock run on engine vacuum or is is on/off?

If just on/off get another nipple cap at a parts store and cover the vacuum nipple.

The line to the petcock is only to help the flow of fuel? I'm getting a lot of back firing and I thought the line might have something to do withit

The original vacuum operated petcock uses vacuum to open the valve for fuel flow. Now you are useing a standard manual valve. You'll need to remember to turn the fuel off when you shut the bike off (the original valve did this for you). If your float valves leak you'll fill your crankcase with gas. As far as the bike backfireing make sure you do a wet float level test to make sure the float levels are right. If the fuel levels are low you'll be lean and that could cause problems. Hope this helps.
