RRCS's '85 XJ700 Bobber project.

First off, HI!

Picked up this maxim (XJ700X) a couple months ago. Had plans to leave it mostly stock. Only planned to maybe update the turn signals and lose the "buddy" seat. My friends talked me out of that plan and out came the sawsall :twisted:

Heres a pic of the bike when I picked it up and one after I did the esential pre ride stripping... had to lose the sissy bar and grab handles befor I'd even ride it to the 7-11 8) :lol:

Heres the list of "mods" so far:

Harley "Nightster" rear shocks 11" Eye to eye
Front forks lowered 2" (slid them up in clamps)
stock seat shaved and refoamed into a single style seat
Rear section "bobbed" (removed framing for pasenger seat)
choped stock rear fender to cover remaining frame
2002 Harley V-Rod Front Fener on rear
Little Daddy Roth Greasy black metallic paint
Renthal dirt bike bars (lower rise)
2010 Honda Fury stock rear view mirrors
Remove/relocate pegs and controls
TC Bros Choppers Forward controls and linkages
Removed pasenger pegs
"homemade" K&N Drop in air filter
"homemade" Stop,tail,turn box W/ Red led tail lights
Street metal Diamond front signals

Emgo Turn-out style mufflers are in the mail...

Doesn't look too far from the original... But I like that.

Nice simple but effective mod... There's something kinda cool about the shorter look gained from removing the rear seat and pulling the fender back.

Highway pegs too... Nice

You put drag bars and new gauges on it too?

Looks fine-but as alive said, not very diff from before.

Absolutly great looking 700-puts mine to shame.

 

I updated my first post with a couple more pics I had available and a list of "mods" so far.

Hopefully the new pics illustrate the changes a little better.

looks pretty slick. Front blinkers and reflectors need attention in a bad way. I'd leave the stock mufflers on and return the EMGO's though. They are garbage.

 

I gotta get some newer pics uploaded. I allready addressed the front sigs. As far as the mufflers, I don't doubt for a min. that a pair of fourty dollar cans aren't gunna be the same quality as the OEM's but it would be nice to get a little more sound out of it than say, George jetsons car....ha ha!

I think I'm gunna go out to the garage and remove the reflectors and take a few more pics now. Your probably the 5th person and first stranger to mention it, so I supose it is time...

 

i like it, good balance, really like the seat and rake you've achieved. rear fender looks just right, not digging the muffler megaphones...needs something more industrial or naked/smaller.
love what you did to the seat, did i mention that?

where are turn signals and brake lights from?

 

I actually don’t like the 700’s, but yours is by far the best and most tastefully customised I have seen. And I mean that, keep up the good work.

I'm liking it. The back end, new seat, and small blinkers are clean man. Kudos!

 

Its not an x, but I like it. The x is liquid cooled.

 

Front signals are from cyclegear, cheapo street-metal brand. They have no running function. Just turn sig.

Rear lights are from speedway hot rod catalog. With a Reese trailer light converter from Kragen to make tail turn and stop all work on two "double filament" led turn signals. Had to add a resistor to dim the "run" circuit because trailers generally have many running lights, causing a single or two lights to run brighter than normal on trailer converter box.

 

Sweet ride man. Love it. I really dig the looks. Love the stock look of these bikes... but it's so much better. I hit you up with a PM too in case you want to part with some old parts...

Also, how did you do the forward controls? Was it mostly a bolt on affair, or did you have to do some custom fab work?

 

I don't doubt it... just going by what my registration says. Having my doubts about weather its a 700 motor at all. Some things don't add up. Lots of parts in my research so far match 750 better.

based on the pics, it's definitely not an x. Do a VIN lookup. Also, somewhere on the engine (believe it's by the exhaust headers will be the CC's - though, I'm @ work, so don't quote me on it). Bet it's 696cc's if you live in the US. However, if it's a 750, you might have a hard time finding parts in the US

 

The forward controls themselves are a kit from TC brothers choppers. I also used their linkage kit. The linkages need to be cut to lenght and the stock shift and brake levers need to be modded to accept ball joints. Mostly bolt on after a couple trips to the hardware store and some cursing.

 

All I know for sure is the info on line on the 85 -86 Models is dodgey at best. Guessing it has something to do with the terriff in place on Jap bikes at the time.

Yes, it reads correctly but the red line is 3000 under. helps me "soft pedal" it when I forget haha!

Just installed a set of these last night. They sound GREAT!!! Very "throaty" at idle. Then sound like a F1/Champ car at 10,000 rpm!!!

80 bucks plus tax for the set. I got them from a local scooter shop, Battlescooter. They look awsome IMO. Really cleans up the rear section. and look pretty menacing at the angle they sit off of stock collector.

Honestly you can find them cheaper online. I just gave my buddy a shot at them for faster shipping on his dime :lol: .

After a couple of days off trolling the board...I know this question is bound to come up.

No, I didn't have to rejet. they bike runs fine. No bogging or other issues.
I'm gunna do a couple throttle chops later with freshly cleaned spark plugs (like back in the 2T days) and see if there is any evidance if foul tuning. But I'm sure every thing is fine.

Just wanted bike to make a >little< more noise. I got NOISE!

Might be looking into making/getting a baffle to slide in to collector side of cans.

 

Hit a gigantic pot hole on freeway this morning. Got me thinking about how my rear fender mounts and the fact that Harley made it out of scrapped soda cans. Not too confident in it keeping my man parts from being sucked in to the rear tire if I ever went ejector seat status ( Harley shocks are stiff as struts ).

Thinking about installing this sissy bar I whipped up:

 

Good idea, that rear tire would SHRED your nads and anything else that's in close proximity in an instant. It's not a nice visual of what could happen, the sissy bar is a good idea.

Hahaha Maxim-X ... I see what you did there. That's a nice sissy bar for just "whipping" it up and I like the pipes. All around a good build man.

 

Mounted sissy bar. I'm sure it will function fine. Not 100% on the look of it though. Usually takes me a couple days to get used to new stuff on my bike... opinions?

Thought about bending it back at a sharper angle about half way up.

 

I vote on moving it back, but your the one that has to be happy with it. Although moving it back may involve lengthening the rear fender a bit as well so play around with it a bit till your happy. :wink:

I'm thinking its gunna stay for now... and stay black for that matter. Mabey adding a Ford model "a" tail light to it as a third brakelight at some point. People in the SF bay area don't respect bikes and LOVE to tailgate.

the color's fine but i think it should be much shorter, maybe 2-3 inches higher than the rear of your seat and follow the seat top outline. more of a grab bar than sissy bar, would better follow the lines of your bike. it'd still keep your ass off the rear tire and wouldn't be so "in your face".
i've been guilty of letting a bad-looking mod stay 'round long enough that i get to liking it til someone points out how crappy it looks.
if you're open to changing it, do it quick....
and while you're at it, loose the seat patch.
