Hi all just wanted to say hello im new to this forum and bikes in general. I bought an 1984 XJ750RL pretty nice shape just been sitting for a little while needs a bit of a tune up and new fluids cant wait to get some questions answered along the way. Bike stripped down so far cleaning it all up fixing up some rusted spots adjusting lines.Hopefully i can pick up an original seat for it. Lmk what you guys think.

Beautiful! I love the frame mount fairing on that generation of Seca.

Where'bouts you located? I thing those 84's are more common in Canada than the States...

looks more like an FJ than an XJ...is there something Im missing?

edit: oh, now I see, transition year. XJ in Canada, FJ in the US, FJ is chain driven.

Even more transitional than that. That tank and fairing date back to the XJ900 offered here (tank) and in other markets as far back as '83; and used beyond for the 750s and 900s that we never saw.

Don't forget Yamaha's penchant for "parts room engineering." And they were playing on the world market stage, not just in the USA.

Check out the original XJ; the 398cc XJ400 (four cyl.) Launched in the Japanese home market two years before we got the (XJ Gen 2) Maxim I; and when the 550 Seca appeared, lo and behold: the same bike with a goofy little fairing and a much bigger mill.

What we saw in the USA was just the "tip of the iceberg" except for the Maxim, which was concocted for us to begin with.
