I'm actually looking for a set too for my 1980 650 maxim. I know others have used 10.5 inch (eye-to-eye) rear shocks from Honda Rebel bikes with success. I'm pretty sure the stock Maxim shocks are adjustable, but to what extent I have no idea.

The problem with using the rebel's shock is that the rebel is a small, low capacity bike. You run the risk of overloading the shocks. 2 up at approx 350-400 lbs would make short work of rebel shocks.

Plenty of posts about using Sportster shocks for approx 1.5" - 2" drop. Understand that lowering also means reducing the available travel.

The stock shocks are only adjustable in spring preload. How much weight the bike will support before the shocks start into their travel. No ride height adjustment available.

Suzuki Savage 650 shocks have been used and I'm sure that they are better suited than 250 Rebel shocks.
