Guys thanks for all of the encouragement regarding the 3D XJ project

If you are interested I have another small sample for you to play with.

The link is to a 3D pdf file of the upper part of the ignition switch.

The PDF format allows you to explore the assembly by left clicking on a part to highlight it
Then right click to do interesting things like hide and make transparent.

Please note that my finished content will be in a more powerful format than the 3D-pdf but this will give you a taste of what is possible.

The file is approx. 8mb and requires you have the latest adobe reader-X

    link to file download

    As usual please provide feedback,

Anyone try this yet. I know the PDF 3D format is not the easiest to use but it is easily avalable.

Just curious if anyone has taken a stab at manipulating the mdel

Ah, I only have Reader v9. Might be why it says it cannot display the page - would have thought an adobe error though.

I have adobe V 7.0.7 at work and the file opened and I could manipulate the model, rotate, zoom and hide – make transparent.
Tools are not as good as version X but it worked.

Works for me! This is way too cool. Excellent job coming from another 3D modeler.

So for the brave who explored the file, do you think if you had a model of the motor or carburetors that it would help with the reassembly process?

    New guy here.

Nice work FlyGP! Is it possible for this model to have an "exploded"view? That would help me when getting "into" parts of the engine/components.

I think it would be helpful to know what you're getting into before you get started as much as after. Or to find a bolt you missed to get something loose.

maybe it's a little too detailed? i had one taken apart cleaned lubed and back together in about 15 minutes and i know there weren't that many parts on the bench, i'd still be putting it back together.
something that comes out as a unit can be drawn as a unit or linked so they move as a assembly, i know i didn't unsolder any wires.
maybe i didn't get in far enough to take the 2 screws out but what do they go into?
this makes it look real intimidating when it's really kind of simple
    multibody part ?

Wow, that burnt up a lot of juice to look at a switch, clever, though.

Gang this feedback is awesome, greatly appreciated.

You guys are exactly correct when evaluating the 3D PDF format, I think it is cumbersome to use and has limited tools for manipulating the model.

The tools you are looking for are accessed by

Hold left mouse button down to rotate

Left Mouse Click on an individual part to highlight the part, then
Right click to open the popup menu, look for the (part options) fly-out menu.

This has the list of things you can do to individual parts.

    Show all parts
    Hide
    Isolate
    Make transparent.

I will not be using the PDF format for the final output, as there are too many limitations, all you can do is view and explore in a not so intuitive manner.

As for the questions on exploded views, the final output will have this capability along with other viewing tricks.

    Polock

The final format will also have the items split into subassemblies as you suggested. As for the number of parts in the upper part of the ignition switch the 3D model is 100% correct as far as part count and arrangement. I do agree that having them arranged in subassemblies will make exploration easer. Thanks for the observation your input is appreciated.

Keep the comments coming I want this to be as useful as possible when finished.
