Yeah real cool except the guy just keeps taking half-hearted passes at the carbs, and apparently hasn't touched the valves either; nor does he even realize he needs to.

He's gonna be at it a while. Wonder how many times he'll have the carbs off/on/off/on before he decides to do it right?

Maybe somebody should give him a link to our site...

Hey guys, thanks for the invite! Ya, the seat didnt turn out as nice as I had hoped (a little to boxy and flat i think) , but it's easy enough to make another eventually. About this valve adjustment; what are the maitenance intervals on it? Is it time already with only 8,000 miles? (I had originally put 13,000 in my blog but I just realized thats my other bike, this one only has 8,000.

    Re: Valve adjustment intervals:

Initial was to have been done at 3,000 miles. (this was the most important one.)

    Then afterward every 5,000 miles.

If yours have never been touched, you're dangerously overdue.

If by some miracle, they WERE checked at 3K like they should have been, you're due again NOW.

I see, I didnt realize. Ill be sure to check them out or get them checked out, but like darkblue said, the project will mostly be put off till spring for now, as Im still waiting for the tank, and its getting quite cold to ride. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Get yourself a manual and do everything in the maintenance section. EVERYTHING, whether the mileage interval has been reached or not.

    Also:
Front brake lines were only good for 4 years...replace them.
Tires are only good for about 5 years...check the date codes.
The rear drum brakes are a big issue...pull the wheel and VISUALLY check for pad delamination.
The valves need to be adjusted BEFORE you can sync the carbs after cleaning.

And last but most importantly...PICTURES!!! We like pictures!

Glad you decided to take me up on the invite, if you have any questions just ask away. There is more knowledge about these XJs on this site than anywhere else.

Also, add the bike to your signature and your location to your profile. If you run in to trouble and someone is close we are usually more than willing to help out in person.

Thanks. I downloaded a pdf of the service manual, I would make it downloadable from my blog but I'm not sure If I legally can since I had to pay for my copy. Can I? Anyways, I at least posted some pics of the maintenance charts: http://theclarkproject.blogspot.com/201 ... chart.html if anyone else needs them.
I searched on this site and on google for free maintenance charts but I didn't find any!
