Does anyone have a picture or layout for the damping blocks on an 82 XJ750, it was looking like half or so of mine were missing when I removed the originals. I have since obtained some new ones, but I am not sure where they go. Looked through the Haynes manual and didn't see anything.
    Anyone know how they go?

    As always, Thanks!

Has anyone ever had a fin break off? In all my years I've never heard or seen it happen.

I've never seen it in normal use either, not on any bike dampers or no. Fins only break from PO's using them as pry points ;)

I have a pet theory about them being for shipping and handling through the factory and beyond. If you say, DO use one fin as a pry point or put similar abusive load on it then it starts pushing on the next fin and helping share the load a fair bit before the cast AL snaps.

If you were to take all of them out the motor will sing with all sorts of oddball frequencies through the rev range.

    They're noise-transmission dampeners.

And I have one broken fin; PO dropped the bike.

I am forever amazed at how dumb I am! I never considered that aspect. Harmonics could possibly cause a fin fracture. Good one BIGFITZ!

It's not the FRACTURE aspect those dampers are meant to prevent.

Actually, they are used to dampen the frequency that is a cause for RIDING FATIGUE.

There are some Frequencies that will lull you into a trance-like fatigue after a prolonged exposure.
The dampers are supposes to combat that situation reducing the chance that the cooling fins will amplify that hypnotic noise.

I think you need to find an American Highway, like I-95 North in Maine, that has straightaway's of 12 miles and more to have the phenomenon start to cause your awareness to be affected.
