    8) So I am new to riding, new to a maxim 650 and a new member. I came across this forum while searching for my first bike. Since buying it, I have been enjoying the recent good weather and been riding my ass off. I am curious about this. When I have the choke on to start it, it will rev at one level then suddenly start revving way high then back down again and then up again likes it racing etc. Is this to be expected? Do I do anything? Is there anything else I might need to know related to starting properly?
    Thanks.

Get a manual and go through the maintenance section. How many miles? Valves been checked? Age of front brake lines? caliper seals, master cylinder?

For your starting, mine holds a steady idle that will climb as it warms up. As it warms up you back off the choke. Which on these bikes is an enrichment circuit as it provides more fuel rather than less air.

You may need to clean your carbs. But you won't get them tuned properly until your valves are in spec.

Welcome to the world of XJ.

Thanks Wing, I really do not know that much yet about bikes but am willing to learn. The bike now has 35765 miles on it. It had tune up this summer. Brake lines replaced 09, master cylinder and caliper seals I have no idea about. Fork seals done in 10. I'm going by the repair bills I was given when I bought bike.

    Welcome Maximon!

One thing you might look into is joining the xj mailing list. Lots of guys in your area who can offer advice and maybe even a hand or two. They even host a carb clinic in the spring up in Huntsville.

Mind you... I haven't been on for a while myself, but I assume it's still active...

    Welcome.

Since you've been on the site I'm sure you noticed
a common thread reguarding the correct way and
order when tuning. If you follow them to the letter
without short cuts your bike will keep you moving for
    many years to come.

Hey I just picked up my first ride this September as well, also a 650 Maxim. I haven't gotten to ride it at all yet. Still needs to much work. What year is yours?

Check out XJ4Ever in the top right corner for parts!

BTW: Its an 1982 xj650 maxim. Its been great riding. Gotta remember to check my oil, cause I am putting in some clicks before the good weather for riding goes away for good.
