A hearty welcome, your trip down memory lane sounds familiar (except my heart was on a used Seca). Be sure to get that seal replaced quick, don't want to have useless brakes. Is the pitting on the traveling surface of the seals? If so, your throwing money away replacing them. New tubes will fix the problem but they are pricey. Forking By Frank (internet search will pull him up) will set you up for about $250 delivered (half the price of the stealership). Glad to have you aboard and send us some pictures!

    Robert,
The pitting is on left fork between triple clamps, you are definatly correct on replacing seals the one that leaks is the left one,so it will leak right on front brake.
I have had resonable luck cleaning under seals on dirtbikes so I'll probably give that a shot if it works I'll be able to pick a convienent time for me to replace, preferably after I come up with a manual.maybe even be able to wait untill next winter.
Yesterday I got some oil, brakefluid, and a oil filter, will get all fluids changed next week.
couple quick questions, aprox. how much oil do these bikes take?I figgured 3-4 qt so I picked up 4 qt.
What aprox air pressure do most folks run in tires,I'm more of a dirt biker so I was guessing the neighborhood of 25 psi on a street bike?
I have a few more questions but this will do for now.
    Thanks
    Rob

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new bike! Those Maxims are sharp bikes.

I'm new here too and I still can't get over how much information can be found here and the help these true XJMasters in here give. Whenever a question pops up in my head (very often at this point), I just type in the subject in the forums section search box and away I go getting my questions answered and learning much more along the way each time.
