I am just wondering. I ran acros this one on Craigs list today.

    http://treasure.craigslist.org/mcy/2605190588.html

I think it is very high, but I am starting to think I am cheap considering I have been looking at a lot of WAY over priced bikes on craigs list. Am I wrong? I just can't see purchasing a 1983 Xj for that much. I would understand if it were in better than good condition and didn't have almost 30,000 miles on it. I just feel like I could get more for that much.

That may be what it's worth to the current owner, but I would have to agree with you, I think he's expecting a lot. I bought an 82 XJ1100 in June for $1000 and it has half as many miles as that one. Granted it was not properly maintained and needs some work, but I haven't found any major problems yet with the exception of a stuck / bent valve. Still haven't had a chance to break down the head and find out what's causing it to stay open. Plus you have to consider that the riding season for many people is coming to an end and there will be plenty of bikes on the market soon if not already. If it was me I would wait it out. There are bound to be other options.

What is a "riding season"? There is no such thing as cold where I live. I understand what you are saying about what it is worth to the owner. I do not think people think about that enough. There is a guy near me that is selling a project bike for $900. It needs a lot of work to get it on the road, and this isn't including the carb rebuild it would need just to get it running. I didn't even give him a offer because I told him I couldn't come near the price he wanted. I didn't want to offend him with my offer. He spent some time on the bike and it ment the world to him, but to anyone els it was just a unfinished project. I think it was a 1980 xv750. I ride my bike everyday, to most people they think my bike is worth some thing. To me I know it isn't really worth much, and if I sold it I would only sell it for $600, but I think I rather ride it untill I do not feel like fixing it anymore. I am looking for another bike. I hope to be able to have my little bobber, and then have a nice ride setting next to it. I am not looking for anyhting perfect, but maybe a daily that isn't hardtailed lol I would be a horrible salesman. If I ever sold this bike I would list every thing wrong with it and hand it to them before they bought it.. I am to honest.

1100's are not as plentyfull as 650's & 750's. If its in great shape it might be worth it. It would need to have good tires, brakes rebuilt, carbs in mint working condition, seat and paint redone or really good original. Most of all electric system in perfect working order. Tranny gears replaced (these are known to have 1st to second gear problems)
I would look it, but be carefull not to beleive too much without receipts.

I have seen a number of XJ1100's here in Ontario sell for $500 with minor problems. Mostly carbs. Saw one with a shifting problem, BUT the owner had just rebuilt the clutch and I suspect the clutch cable had not been reset properly.
So they are not worth any more then any other XJ reguardless of the engine size. It all comes down to how much work does it need to get running and what condition it is in.

I bought a mint XS1100 for $800 in Jan. Original paint, Only had to do new fluids and rebuild the carbs and petcocks. The real problem was the previous owner cut the pipes off and it sounds like an Indy car. So I'm looking for a set of pipes at the moment.

Picked up an 83 Maxim 1100 back in March for 500bucks that had 98000km. Rebuilt the entire brake system and a few other cheap repairs. 18000km later and still running strong!

OMg, I am getting frustrated now.. Look at this.. Fresh paint?? Take a stock
xj, throw funny looking handle bars on it, a nutty seat, spray paint it black, cut off the exhuast, call it a bobber, and sell it for twice what you paid!!! WTShit. He is upping the price if he mounts the seat.. AM I crazy or is this a crappy bike not worth $1500.. I almost e-mailed him to tell himhe added an extra zero on accedent.... Ugh getting sick of this.. I find good deals, but the number of rip offs I find make me sick. I wonder if people sell bikes like this??? I should post my bike on there and put best offer to see what comes back..
