I installed my XJ 650 Maxim gas cap on my new XJ 750 Seca gas tank but liquid keeps coming out of the top of the gas cap. The gas cap locks on the tank but there is this spring action going on with the gas when I lock it. Is this normal b/c I did not see this happen on my Maxim gas tank?

    Thanks guys

Some "spring action" in the gas cap is normal, yes.

One possibility is that your seal is dried out and took a "set" from the ridge of the other tank. Now that it's pressing against a different neck ridge, it's not flexible enough to conform and is leaking. The solution would be to rebuild the gas cap assembly (chacal has the parts) or at least replace the seal assembly.

That being said, I do know that there was an "early" gas cap and a "later" gas cap, but the only difference I was aware of is the need to use the key to lock one style, while the other type could be re-latched with the key out.

Take a tape measure, and hook the end of it under the lip of the filler neck tube inside the tank, and measure the height of the tube. The cap latches to the bottom of the tube; see if they're different lengths.

If both tanks match up, filler-neck wise, you need a new seal or seals in your gas cap.

Schmuckaholic recently posted a really good PDF "how-to" on gas caps. You may not need to tear yours completely down, you might just need the seal. Have a look: http://mok.fileave.com/gas%20cap.pdf
