So i Am getting a 84 650 maxim for 200 bucks. Im hoping to use it as a parts bike for my 81 maxim if the parts are compatible which from what I've seen around the site should be. But if not Im gonna keep it and bob it. This 84 if Im right should have the yics system. My 650 doesn't. What i would really like to know is if the yics abduction no. Yics engines are compatible. The body, and the electronics should all be the same but Im not sure about the engine.

    Thanks

That was supposed to say. What i would really like to know is if the yics and the non yics engines are compatible.

My stupid phone likes to make me look like i want to abduct people. Maybe i will, i wonder how many bikes some one like fitz is worth?

I don't know a whole lot, but I know 81 - 83 are the same. 84 will have certain incompatibilities.

This is where fitz chimes in with a one word answer, and a short explanation why. Lol

The manual for my 81 (which i have yet to receive) is for 81-84 650s. Shouldnt the two bikes be mostly compatible then?

    You want the short answer?

Here in the USA, there wasn't a 1984 XJ anything.

There was however, an '84 650 Maxim for Canada. Mechanically, it should be the same as the later 650 Maxims ('82-'83) with the YICS motor, which means an electronic tach.

The early 650 Maxims with the non-YICS motor ('80-'81) used a mechanical tach.

Other than YICS itself, and the difference in tachometer drive; everything else is pretty much the same, mechanically.

    Does that help?
