Hey all, new to the xj scene. We just bought an awesome 1983 xj750 midnight maxim and the tranny gasket is leaking like a sieve. The bike sat for over 1 1/2 years so old gaskets are sure to be apparent. Just wanted to know if I should look for anything in particular when changing this gasket. Also I have bought 3 quarts of castro 20w50 to refill the crankcase after I'm done with a new filter. The bike is a trainer for our son who bought an 05 1300 and will use this for road practice till he feels comfortable on his bigger bike. Then IT IS MINE!!! HAHAHA!

    Thanks for the input

    Andy

And when it is yours you will know you got the better deal. Gasket is straight through job. Remove footpeg and gear shift assembly to get cover off. Clean with permatex gasket remover (if needed) and cut new paper gasket. On the inside of the cover is a metal box. This is the oil seperator. It also has a gasket so check to see if it is leaking too.

Undo the screws and carefully remove the baffle after you get that cover off ... then, you can make a lipstick impression of the case ... trace it ... or, do what ever trick you like to make a new gasket.

Seal-up the baffle before reinstalling it.

Might as well replace the shift-shaft seal while you have the case off.

I hope the kid manages to learn without mishap. Then, you'll have some fun winding-out a DOHC-4 Banger.

Yea I know Harrison. I used to go up that way to canoe with boy scouts when I lived in Memphis. Went skiing up there too at Mountain Home.
