My '82 750 Maxim J does not seem to charge on tickover, someone told me this is a design fault and it only charges above 2000 rpm.
Can anyone confirm this and is there a modification?
    Thanks.

Not sure about "tickover" I assume you mean idle. Your idle should be about 1100 RPM. What voltage are you measuring at idle vs voltage at 2000 rpm??
You should check your alternator brushes and make sure the surfaces they rub on are clean and the brushes are in spec. If they are less than 10mm you'll need to replace.

Also put what model and year of bike in your signature so we all know what you are working on.

    Hey Guys,

Any particular chemical/cleaner that we should use to clean the surface that the alternator brushes rub against? just making sure I don't ruin a bigger part while changing the brushes :D. What a pain getting the screws out of the cover, yikes!

    In answer to your question:

Confirmed. This is a drawback to the design of the charging/regulating system; it depends on a fully capable battery to carry the workload below about 2000rpm.

There is no mod that I'm aware of to "correct" this.

You'll want to gently clean the comutator (Where the brushes ride) On brush style electric motors we use a com stone to clean while the motor is running. You can't do that on these bikes, but you can use very fine sand paper just to clean the black off. Just be sure you remove all of the residue when you clean it off.

    Help! Same kind of issue.
I have a 1982 xj750j, 100,000 miles on it. It's been running great. Just completed an Iron Butt ride around Lake Huron. But now, it just decided to stop charging the battery. I replaced the stator, rectifier, and battery. I snipped off the connector from the stator to the harness and hardwired it too just in case the connector was getting shoddy. Still absolutely no battery charge when the engine is running. Zilch, nothing. The new stator was tested and checks out to be be fine. So what the heck could be preventing the battery from charging?
