eventually when I get to the engine and carbs........

I understand pods are challenging but the airbox is not so attractive.

has anyone tried to build a custom airbox so as to allow the carbs to function closer to stock?

What would be the major factors considered?

for instance would the customer box need to be exactly if not close to the overall volume of the stock box or is it all in the shape and delivery of the air?

Just things that keep me up at night.........

The biggest factor on the effect of the airbox would be the velocity, and direction of the air moving through the carbs. If you duplicate the effect of the carb to airbox boots. You create the velocity, and vacuum effect necessary to make these carbs work properly.

To make any kind of air filtration work properly you would need to place a velocity stack between the carb throat, and air filter plenum

An example of a velocity stack used with pods.

Pay close attention to what streetbrawler describes as a velocity pod.

The air flow needs to be aimed directly at the carb throat. Not from the side as the pod fiters do.

Once you understand how you need to shape, and direct the airflow into the carb throat. You can use nearly any air filtration system.

Has anyone ever tried a breadbox style airbox/filter setup? They used them on Hondas and Suzukis IIRC. Here's a page showing how to modify one to eliminate "cross-flow" problems. Unfortunately, I think one for an XJ would have to be custom made to get the correct spacing between carb throats.

    Just curious...

Someone did make a custom airbox and claimed success on a thread about 2 years ago. Don't remember who but I saved the pic. It's shaped like a Maltese Cross with the inlet at the bottom .
