I just swapped engines, buying a used engine off ebay. I can NOT figure out what to do with the 6" wire that comes off the oil sending unit on the bottom of the bike--I'm told I have to have it--but I can NOT see where it attaches to, for all my wires go where they are supposed to, and I don't see any places for it to attach to. I drove to a cycle graveyard in Phoenix to look at another bike, and there, it came off a harness of wires by the timing plate under the "Yamaha" cover, to left of the bike (as one sits on the bike). But on my bike, there is no place that comes off the harness to go to this 6" wire with the male end. Where does it go? What do I do? I'm using the same wiring harness as on my old bike. I took a pic of this, and tried to attach it here, but 4 times it gave me "internal error", so I can't show you it here.

That is for the low oil light. Wiring diagram time.

So can I run the bike without it? I wonder if I ever had this hooked up, since I cant find a place on my wiring harness, which is the same harness I took off my old bike. If all it does, is tell me when I am low on oil, I think I can do without it, and just check my visual glass thing for that right? Otherwise, I do have a manual I bought off this site 7 years ago, and I think I do know which wire it might be, if it is the same one I saw at the bike graveyard--then, just a matter of splicing--I don't think I had it connected before. So I can start the bike and run it without?

    Hi there,

I read where the 2.7L motor had this issue and the suggestion was to put a Wire Terminal Vent in the Oil Pressure Sending unit wiring. I have also hooked up a computer and the oil pressure goes from 148 psi to 0 psi and then back to 148 psi. They left all the hoses, plug wires, etc up so I can just compare the 2 engines if I get confuse. Swap the spark plugs, inspect the wires, spray some cleaner on the plugs, maybe hit up the intake manifold with some sort of lubricant. Remove the main motor wiring harness from the new motor making note of what colorod wires and grounds connect where on the motor. Removed the oil sending unit sensor with a cresent wrench and busted the clip holding the sensor wire on. I think some electrical tape will be fine.

    Regards,
    Xing

Yes, all it does is warn of a low oil level, and yes you can run without it.

We were just discussing the silly thing recently, in regard to how it would be a lot more effective if it were an oil pressure warning light, but it's not.

Okay--thanks. So then, I must not have had it connected before either, since there was no wiring connector for it anywhere. When one swaps engines, there are all sorts of little things like this that plague one. I've gone 3 1/2mos. now without my bike, over "issues" in the transfer. The first one was the counterbalance mechanism that I could not get off my old engine, and one mechanic almost busted it off trying to take off with a 3 prong puller--went 4 places around Phx. I had to drive 100 miles to a place that would take it off for me another way, which was NOT with a jaw set, but with a simple threaded bolt AND a 1/2"spacer that was also necesarry, because of cross threads involved on one end of the counterbalance thing--called something else starting with S, but forgot--but it did not come with the newer engine I got--they stripped it down to just the engine, so had to transfer so much--that is where the problems began. While waiting for someone to reply to this, I drove 20 miles back to that junkyard to find the wife this is suppose to splice into, so I have that info. now too, if i want to cut into the harness--black, with red stripe--not sure if I want to do that or not, now that I know I don't really need this--yet, maybe having a backup light for when the oil gets low is not such a bad idea. At least now, if I don't get it to work still, I can pull it, and live without it--thanks for the info.--now I know.

Counterbalance mechanism? On an aircooled XJ700? What are you talking about? It sounds like you're describing the alternator.

As far as the oil level sending unit; don't start cutting into your harness based on what you observed at the junkyard.

GET A MANUAL FOR YOUR BIKE and go by the actual wiring diagram.
