I have been getting my maxim 650 ready for the upcomming riding season. I went to start my bike.......it fires.....spits and sputters abit......then revs up to 4-5,000 RPM's and shuts off. I'm thinking that the problem is in the carbs, as in they need cleaned and and rebuilt. Ideas??

Overhaul the carbs and get them right on the hairy-edge of fine tuning for the season. With the carbs right-on-the-money ... you'll have a fun time going someplace just to ride your bike!

    Ooooooooh ... Oooooh-whaa ... Whaaaaa ... waaa ... weeeeeeyaaaah

    Yeah!!!!

    Shaun,
Perhaps before you go all the way on the carbs, you should maybe drain the tank and check the screen inside and see if it's plugged up. That could save you alot of hassle.
Another problem could be the fact that the vaccum hose on your percock is not turning the gas on when you start it and your running out of fuel?
I figure it's better to start at the source and elliminate the obvious before tearing into the carbs. Just a thought. >PD<

when I drain the gas will I be able to see the screen from the gas cap. If it appears dirty, do I take the tank off and the petcock?

No, you won't see it from the gas cap. You need to pull the petcock assembly from the bottom of the tank.

Nice bike and what a good price....

I MIGHT be able to get my hands on a cheap, low milage 650 Turbo... :)

well...I drained the gas and checked the screen. and it looked as if it were brand new. not dirt or contaminates. my bike does not rev to 4-5,000 anymore by itself after starting. it just spits and sputters then shuts off. I checked the plugs and they are clean, but wet w/ gas. so it is getting fuel.
