Hey whats up guys? Just picked up an '82 650 and glad to find a forum.
The bike seemed to be in pretty good condition. Picked it up for 500 beans and the guy gave me two new tires, so I'm thinking I got a good deal??

It started up after throwing on the battery charger for 10 mins, but gas was coming out of the exhaust which made me guess the floats were stuck. After playing with the carbs I decided to just take 'er to the dealership cause I needed ties put on anyhow. They are gonna do a full inspection of the bike for me for a decent price, but I couldn't believe he told me to put the tires on it would be $195.00!! I gave em the go ahead cause I have gone here for years and always had great service and I find them to be comparable in price.
Well, now I just wait until they call.

Been Riding quads and Bikes for years, This is my Street bike, I can't wait to Ride!!

My dad bought his 82 650 brand new, he rode the hell out of it then it sat in his garage for 8 years, motionless, then last spring gave it to me, so far i've put about $1000 bucks into restoring it, looks great but it's never idled right, needs carbs synched, it's drives like a cruiser but runs like a sportbike, definetly a great first bike

I'm so Pi**ed right now. The dealership called aand said compression is 85, 85, 120, and 45!! He also said their is rust in the gas tank. So he said it would be like a thousand dollars to get into it. I don't know what to do.

To have the dealership continue would really make a dent in your pocketbook. Rust in the gas tank means you have to clean your carbs again. Then get the tank coated. This is all before you get the bike to run like you want. Take it home and spend some time wrenching.

Agreed, you need to dig in, if nothing else, to save your wallet. $195 for mounting? You can do it at home for less than $25 in tools. Low compression is not the end of the world. It is possible the rings are sticking (happens when they sit for a while) and you won't get a decent compression test until you get them loose. Squirt some Marvel Mystery oil down each cylinder and turn it over by hand without plugs. Screw in the plugs by hand and leave it setting overnight. Next day, roll it outside and fire it up after you tighten the plugs. It's going to smoke something fierce for a few minutes but you should notice an improvement on your numbers. Get the carbs cleaned and follow the de-rusting process linked on our site for your tank (drop a line to Chacal on how to do this, he does a really great job). Use some Seafoam to clean out the rest of the system and you should be ok to go (without paying a fortune to the stealership).

Cant agree more with Robert, Surprisingly there isnt a great amount of effort required to overhaul parts or engines for that matter, it's a walk in the park if done right & rest assured u'll do it right if u keep us updated on your progress here all along :)
