Can anyone suggest who has a great reputation for cleaning and rebuilding carbs? I want to send them out for this job to be sure they are done right.

To sync and re-jet he needs the whole motorcycle.

The best you can get shipping carbs is cleaned, float levels set, bench synced and idle mixtures in the ballpark. If you don't have stock intake or exhaust the idle mixtures may not even be in the ballpark. To get the rest they need to be on the motorcycle.

MiCarl is right, we cant re-jet or sync without the while bike. We can do a stock rebuild that will require miminla tuning on your part to have then right.
Check your PMs, I sent you a long note.

Hi Copper, I was wondering why you want someone else to do the job? do you live in an apartment and have no facilities or do you just not trust in your skills? Because if it's the latter have no fear my boy! I have done this work on both of the XJ 650's I used to own. While it's not a job for the faint hearted, it's not that difficult a job. The worst part is getting the darned things off of the engine. And here is some advice to everybody reading this, before the attempt, remove the "CLUTCH CABLE ROUTING STAY", the one that's mounted near the top of one of the carbs, I failed to do this on my first 650 and I broke a piece of the airbox out when that stiff little bast*** caught in one of the holes. It wasn't a big deal though, I just glued the piece back in with some Testors model cement. But if you want somebody else to do it, don't pay more than $100.

That is insanely low. To clean, sync and set mixtures I charge $350 + parts. This past summer I had a 4 week waiting list because I'm the cheapest around and I actually do them right.

If you're sending them out it should be less because you are doing the R/I and fine tuning. To do them right you should expect to spend North of $200 + parts.

I had RickCoMatic, found on this site, do my carbs and he does them right.
He goes beyond just a cleaning. He buffs, checks everything, etc.
When you get your carbs back he will walk you through the sync process, etc. I think that he is probably one of the best when it comes to these carbs.
My carbs actually sing now when I run my bike. It is awesome. Think that the bike runs better than when it was new. I highly recommend Rick.

    +1 on the cost.

The local independent bike shop wanted $800.00
    to do a guy's '82 xj650 carbs + seals.

I did them for free and felt like real idiot when I found
out how much the shop wanted.

I would have charged at least $300.00 had I known at the time.

That's why I'm not a business man, I guess I find the job to be easy.

Reminds me of the story of the wizard maintenance man who retired from the factory, and when the largest piece of equipment in the plant died, they spend thousands trying to fix it... to no avail.

They called the retired maintenance man, who came in and inspected, listened, tapped, etc., until he finally marked a big red "X" on the problem component. Once replaced, the machine happily ran again.

When the company received his bill for $50,000 and asked for an itemized breakdown, he responded:

    One red "X": $1
Knowing where to put it: $49,999

RickCoMatic is reasonably priced and your carbs will never be better.
Write him to get his number and give him a call. He can tell you everything that he does to the carbs.
If you send them to Rick, you will get them back at there peak!

I bought my bike from a friend after he decided he didn't want something that fast. He was ok with the performance until he paid someone (who used to be a shop mechanic, but retired) $200 + parts to clean the carbs. That was $100 off because he was a friend of the family.

The time spent on cleaning the carbs right is substantial. Hell, I spent 4 hours just cleaning mine and they were spotless when I pulled them.

Add re-sync and tune and you could pay more than you paid for the bike.
