I bought a 1982 XJ750 for $200.00 an im working on rebuilding it. I completely rebuilt the engine, and have everything together. But now, when I press the start button, nothing happens. The light dims like its trying to start, but nothing happens. If I jump the starting seylanoid, it cranks over perfectly fine! What could be my problem? I would GREATLY appreciate any input anyone has. Thank you!

Since you can get the Engine to crank by shorting the H-T Posts on the Solenoid; you are going to have to trace the IGN Circuit looking for what and WHY the Circuit isn't getting energized by some Circuit Problem.

You have to Rule Out obvious problems know to cause Non-starting.
    Fuse Panel
    Fuses
    Switches
    Relays

You NEED a Multi-Meter and a Test Light.
You NEED a Wiring Schematic to Illustrate the Circuit and Components
    You need a Test Light.

I'll chip-in this much, ... to help you save some time.

Buy one of these Test Lights:

    For $12.00 its GREAT.
When you test to see if a wire is hot or not, ...
It -- LIGHTS ==> and <== BEEPS if the wire's HOT.

Cut a finger off a leather work glove.
Slide a sliver of Belt Leather in it.
Wear it when you Test Circuits with the TEST Light.

You don't have to be afraid of impaling your finger with the Test Light Probe with the Belt leather and Glove finger to save you from being stabbed.

I had this exact problem on a '79 Suzuki rebuild, all rebuilt and put back together, starter button wouldn't work but could jump it and no problem ... maybe to simple but I had a bad ground, too much paint on the frame, go with Rick on the test light.
    Good luck.

Thanks! I have this issue solved! The problem was the crappy old fuse box was no longer giving solid connection. I put in-line automotive style fuse boxes in, it fires up and runs like a champ! Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it!
