I tend to like the chrome fenders on old cruisers. Black cherry is a awesome color I also really like how the HOK KBC brandywine came out on my bike and if you did it over a dark base you could get it near to black.

If the whole bike is painted one color; no matter what color, ... after awhile it can look pretty bland.
But, ... if you add "Highlights"; you can make it look pretty special.

Stripes, Pin-stripes, Badges and Decals can provide an attractive and "Eye-catching" splash of excitement.

Car Door "Protective Edging" can be applied to the Fuel Tank's seam.
Use a Hair Dryer to soften the Vinyl for making the Goose Neck.
Splice the edging for long-runs by making a joining BIAS "Miter-cut" and seating the edge with a Rubber Mallet.

    3M makes D-I-Y Pin-Stripe.
Available in a wide variety of Colors and Stripe widths.
    Single and Multi-stripe.

The Pin-stripe comes on a long roll.
Cut as much as you need for dressing a Fender or some other Part.
The actual STRIPE is an adhesive strip protected by a thin plastic layer.
Its vinyl. Pulls perfectly straight. Folo's contours and bends around corners.

    You apply the Press-on Stripe.
"Seat it" with pressure from a friction tool (like a wooden spoon) and peel-off the protective layer; leaving the Stripes ... in any color or design your heart desires.

Other colorizing you can do with whatever fancy-schmancy, totally designer, Nail Polish ... from the SALE Rack for $1.99 a Bottle.
    Cut the Cap-brush off.
    Drip a Dime-sized drop on a 3X5 Card.
Use a Fine-line, Artist Brush to apply the simply-gorgeous color.
Unclog the Brush with Carb Cleaner.

I got the vinyl decals for my 750 (tuning forks for my tank, seca 750 for side covers, and yamaha for the tail section) from this guy. Had them done in chrome but he had a good selection of colors.

you can kind of see them on tank and side covers here

Here is how I custom painted my XJ1100. It was stock black and decided everyone had that color scheme. Went back with a purple that actually changes colors depending on the angle and sunlight. The Yamaha and Maxim insignias are a faint yellow or gold that then have several coats of clear to protect the finish.

I would suggest you keeping the fenders chrome and shiny, but that's just my opinion. Custom painting your bike is the way to go because nobody willl have one exactly like it. Good luck and post pics once you get it done.

I chose to go to the local jr.college and take the intro
to body work, then the airbrushing class.

Each class was only one day a week so I could fit it in to
    my work schedule.

My instructor sold me paint and clear for like $ 20.00 that otherwise
would have cost several hundred. All I had to buy was the primer.

Had all the tools I needed plus a great teacher to guide the way.

If you need to have all that slack in the Fuel Line to lift the Tank for Tuning, ...
you should add a couple of Right Angles and a "Bikers Choice Fuel Line Quick Connect"

The Bikers Choice Connection is a Free Flowing Coupling that SEALS itself when the Connection is separated for moving the Tank. It would allow you to hide that Yellow Hose Loop.

    Rick,
Yes, those pics were taken right after the paint was finished and have now been shortened (out of sight). LOL. I like those quick connects though, pretty cool.
    Thanks

Check this link out for some ideas. Their pearls and flakes are awesome and affordable. I use it when painting the custom guitars I build.

I just finished my tank up today with the Yamaha tags. and matched the custom rear fender. Im not running a front fender at all though. I was going for an industrial look for it. I wanted it to look like someone gust drove the bike straight out of a machine shop.

I've got a lot of things I want to get done this winter before that tank goes back on. I am just prayin that I stumble upon a place to tear the entire bike down. (working in a parking lot sucks)I want to blast and paint the frame so badly. Im thinking Olive Drab Green in the military sense. A lot of the other parts will get either striped or blasted as well and painted semi-gloss black.

Here is an atypical color --

I'll have chrome badges w/black background and black mirrors and carbon turn signals - chrome fenders and highly polished aluminum to set of the black/yellow -- I may try a bit of black pinstripe on the tank and side covers... I will be assembling more this week end and should be able to show more progress soon.
