Soooo. i found an 1983 XJ 900... right on, get there, no carbs, no air box and the frame had been hacked. soooooo, what ever i got a xj 750 at home, theres lots of xj parts around, no big deal.....ahhhh not so much for the 900.... sooooo what do i do?

i pulled the plugs and checked compression, motor looks good. brakes, wheels and drive all checks out good. havnt checked valves yet.

the guy i bought it from said it ran great, took it apart to build a bobber and copped out. sooo what do i do?

part out the rest or start a hunt for carbs and air box and try to piece together a cafe?

I'd keep it. Start by PMing rickomatic and chacal and see if they can dig up the carbs and airbox for you.

If you get it back together you have one of the rare ones.

Oh yuck. You don't want to even mess with that. It's a headache and you're gonna have a heck of a time finding those parts for it.

Oh, what to do.....what to do.....hmmmmm

Hey, I have an idea! Bring it down here to me and drop off the junker in my yard. I'm sure that I could find something to do with it......

That would bring me up to, hmmm, number 4 ?!?!? <G>

Seriously, though, you'll have a challenge to find those parts.

Now here's a question, is yours a general XJ900 or is it one of the few that were originally USA-delivered? IF it is one of the US-delivered one, I'd like to get it registered on the XJ900RK Seca Database.

    PM me please.

    Thanks,

    Dave Fox

Approch the problem logicly. There are some questions that should be answered that will help you make that decision.
    1. Do you have a title for the bike?
    2. Do you have the skills, and experience to rework what the PO has done to make the bike safe again?
    3. Are you comfortable with spending approx $1500 - $2000 to rebuild the bike to make it road worthy again?

If you answered no to any question then you are most likely going to be looking at parting it out

The carbs, and airbox are available on ebay. The big question is how much you are willing to spend. The parts for the 900's carry a higher price tag.

I am in the process of restoring one myself. You can see what I started with in the following post.
    Homeward bound: XJ900 Seca Rescued!!

Like you I started with a fairly stripped out bike. It came with a title, and unaltered frame. To me it was worth it because of the price that I got it for. I have picked up some of the pieces that I need to put it back together, and still have plenty of room for the cost of the rebuild.

If you do decide to part it out, or sell it complete. Let Dave, and myself know. I am sure that between the two of us. We will probably make short work out of it.

BTW. PM'ed you my list if you do part it out.

You have a very nice bike but it depends on what you would want to do with it. The guys are right....first things first. Do you have the title? If so read on, if not, part it.

Ok, so you have the title then....now it's easy....do you or would you want a bobbed 900? If so, you're set. No one says you HAVE to use stock carbs on it as lot of different carbs will work just fine although to use something different, you'll have to reset the jetting. Not a big deal nor expensive if you approach it correctly.

Now if you DONT want a bobbed bike, then again, you might want to part it out.

Above all remember this(sorry guys)Naw, I'LL pm this part to you.

There's a dead XJ900RK in Floral City, FL at an odd junkyard/scrapyard that has 1,000 bikes - - I believe it had an airbox and a full, uncut frame.
There's also one being parted, slowly, in St. Clowd, FL by an E-Bay Breaker.

There's hope for you yet, and Welcome to the site !!

If i were to keep it, i would try to go for a bob or a cafe street fighter look. i got the one xj 750 in the works right now of becoming a bobber. im not working with a large budget, but the 750 is in need of some lights, a rear fender and its done. bike was bought for 300, was told it didnt run, played with some wires, put it on charge. after 3 mins of cranking it over with slight gasps of life, it fired right up. changes some bearings and check valves, synced carbs. easy! too easy!!!! i seen this bike on Kijiji listed as a bobber project that was never completed, get there and i find a xj 900 with no carbs and 3 boxes of 1969 triumph bonnieville parts, which i sold the next day to cover the cost of my carb-less Xj. im not scared of jettting, as i race motocross and i am way to familiar with changing jets. although the mx bike is one carb that rotates sideways, and rejet. these dont look as easy.

But im not scared, im just wondering if this bike is worth it. im gonna check the title today. and im gonna try to get some pictures up here so you guys can check it out.
