I came upon this post from a website "FZ6-Forum.com" about rewinding the alternator in order to increase output or something - I quote "Ok so with this senior design project I am putting to standard lights on the trailer. However these added lights will possibly put me over the max stator output, so I had to do some calculations...

We all know the stator has 310watts, and the bike pulls 240w. This leaves 70w.

Add the dual head light mod, and depending on the power of your H4 bulb, there goes a good chunk of power. Add a high wattage high beam like 100/55w I have and your screwed... In addition, a intercom/CB system and I am not sure how my bike is even charging.

I found a company called Custom Rewind out of Birmingham Alabama that has agreed to rewind my stator. This company is well known in the Gold Wing community as they are usually able to rewind a stator and increase its output over the factory numbers. After playing phone tag with the owner, Gary, he said that he had never rewound a FZ6 stator and wasn't sure how much more juice he could get out of it, but felt fairly certain he could get something.

I pulled the stator off earlier this week and shipped it to him on Thursday. He told me he would get this done ASAP and have it back with some numbers recorded.

As usual I will be sure to post the results when I find them out and I will ask him what the going rate will be for this service. I am sure many of you will be interested in having this done if the results are positive"
    Is this possible? Any Thoughts?

When adding any type of after market lights (clearance or brakelights) it's always best to go with LEDs because of the little power needed to light them.

My only question would be what you're going to do to increase the capacity of the regulator/rectifier to handle the increased output. With these systems as "on the edge" as they are originally, I'd be concerned about the smoke getting out. (That's the "pre-installed" smoke contained in every electrical component; bad things happen if you let it out.)

"bad things happen if you let it out" :D luv that!
yeah my knowledge of electronics is "a little limited" but hving found that post I thought I would put it out there n find out from people who DO know - glad I did ;)

    Shangovi,
Yes it is possible to rewind your stator to get more power out of it. There's sites that actually show you how to do it. I found them on another forum that was discussing that very topic.
I do not have the site at my disposal right now, but if you do a google search, I'm sure you'll find several.
It's not easy and it's time consuming, but doable.

Anyone stripped open an XJ regulator?

Do they regulate the output like a car alternator, by controlling the field current? Or do they just use clamping diodes to limit the output voltage like most small engines?

If its just zenner diodes then the reg may melt down if you supply more power, without consuming it.

I would think that the diodes in the rectifier will handle at least 60 amps and the original stator probably put out 40 amps max. So it all depends on what the increased amp load will be. If its more than 60 amps, I would ask the person that's doing the work if he has a better regulator/rectifier to go with it.

    Should be fine then.

I also just realized the police specials in Aus have a larger Alternator but use the same reg.

Also, using a Mosfet type regulator, like the newer Yamahas have, will increase your output without running hot like the stock regulator does.
