The Cam Chain Tensioner on my 1985 XJ 700Maxim, is it manual or automatic? How can you tell?

According to the fiche, your bike has the automatic type.

The manual type has an adjuster bolt and locknut sticking out of the (right) side as in the illustration below; yours will not have that. Yours should be smooth with a hex cap on the very tip; that's not a point of adjustment.

    This is the MANUAL TYPE:

Sorta. There's a procedure to "trick" the automatic tensioner into actually doing its job; I don't have it memorized because all of my XJs have the manual ones.

Sure looks like that back rim has gone through a fire. That could be a big, quick clue as to the history! I guess it is possible that it is just mud and dirt, but it looks more like burned finish to me.

Besides that, the color of the rims is wrong.

The Manual coaxing of a Auto Tensioner is easy enough.
You "Present" the Slack in front of the tensioner.

Having an assistant "Drum" on the Tensioner while you manipulate the Chain, ... helps.

    Pull the Plugs
Remove the Crank-cover and put a Wrench on the Flats.
Smoothly turn the Engine over 4-times Clockwise beginning at the TDC Mark.
Slowly come to a stop at the end of the 4 turns.

Have the asst begin tapping on the end of the tensioner, ...
    Then, ...
    In a swift motion, ...
Jack the Crank over ... Counter-clockwise ... presenting any slack in the Chain in front of the Tensioner.

The Tensioner should react and extend to remove the slack.
