Does anyone know what they were for these XJ models, year by year or model by model? Not the Yamaha factory order/option code, but like the code you would use at an auto paint shop to order the correct colors? Or the paint color formulas, Dupont, RM, etc.?

My bike came back from the repair shop with a few scratches so I'd be interested in this one as well.

The only website I had any kind of luck with was the ppg auto paint site. It looks like it's only concerned with car colors, but when I put in a specific motorcycle color, like Kawasaki "firecracker red", it gave me this result:

    http://www.ppgcarpaint.com/paints-bycol ... d&AFO=auto

So if you know the NAME of your color, you might be able to find it. And if you call the 800 number, they can probably help you (but I can't vouch for the 800 number, I haven't called them yet). I hope this helps somewhat. :)

I've been painting cars for about 5 years now... and when I am in dire need of something hard to find... I hit my local paint shop for two things.

    1) Chip books. Make Model and Year gives you all the paints they had with a chip to match to. They might have something like this for bikes.

    2) Craig. (a guy) Every respectable paint shop has one, an old guy that has been doing this for longer than he can remember. He can match it from a part, or match and then adjust by hand to get a perfect (undecernable) match. That's how I do it anyway.

If anyone is willing to wait,( a couple of months) I work in a paint shop over the summers, and we have a computer database that has all the old Yamaha paint codes. I should be able to dig up the color codes. I found my own, Yamaha Blue/Black (can't remember the code though. right off hand.)

One word of caution with going by the color name (firecracker red for example) doesn't always work. PPG's firecracker red could be completely different from ICI's or Sata's firecracker red. We go through this daily at work. The only way to get a true match is to get the paint code.

Could I suggest you make the info available to the XJCD group?

These are the two best sites I know of. Although I don't know about specific codes, I don't think you'll find better sources.

Using their menus for our older bikes will result in no products found. But if you put "Yamaha" in the search box just look how many results you get. Also, from what I understand they do very well if you contact them with a specific request. I've never used them, but they are very highly recommended:

Still at the ColorRite, just as an example, this is the page for "Sparkle Maroon" used on my '85 MaximX which you won't get using their menus:

[Really weird browsing - if you just put "colorrite.com" you get a church website, so make sure you follow the links provided.]

This second one is also recommended. This page has a long list of Yamaha paint codes. (Which is difficult to decipher and not alpha/numeric - fun.)

In a parallel universe, the XJCD team spent many hours this winter working out all Yamaha colour codes up to the mid-90's against the name and official abbreviation. It is our intent to include this data with the actual part description in the future version of XRef.

For the moment, you can preview the raw data here:
    http://www.surenet.net/~verhey/temp/colour_fiche.xls

NOTE: use at own risk. I stress that this is not an official list published by Yamaha. This is the raw by the XJCD research team (ie: me and my son ;-) and should be considered unverified as yet.
