I checked the value of my xj on kbb. It says its worth 950 in excellent shape. I have more in it in blood and tears. Point being You almost have to have a love affair with these bikes.

That's a pretty accurate statement. The various books, blue, black and otherwise really don't grasp the value of any vintage bikes. They can be useful when buying to help negotiate with a novice seller but even with them, I usually clue them in.

You will see some guys that don't have the knowledge so they will cling to their blue book since they can't let themselves trust anthing they hear. Once in a while though, the book will nail the average price but personally, I think it's more to do with luck then accurate pricing.

    just my view.....

Indeed. Once you do everything necessary to make one actually safe and rideable, you're "upside down" and that's all there is to it.

    Yes, yes, and yes.

What I've come to appreciate about this website is that it is not about economics, but about passion. The folks here are passionate about XJ bikes. Price issues do not really come up that often. The object is to get the bike to be in good tune, brake well, and be reliable. The pleasure is in the doing, the admiring and the riding. And, sometimes money has to be spent to achieve this objective.

    Hey Jay,

Yeah, You're right. That's almost always the case.

Hey, happen to be able to get those gauges faces sent to me soon so that I can increase the value of my XJ? Been waiting over a year now.........

    Thanks,

    Dave Fox

I dont care what the blue book value is. I pick up bikes here and there, I never keep them very long usually but my Seca is MY BIKE. KBB can call it what ever it likes and it does not matter because that is not for sell
if a frame cracks, I'll weld it
if an engine blows , I'l replace it and rebuild the blown one if possible
It aint the money I just had a very nice Shadow 1100 but I liked my XJ.
others will come and go, that Seca isn't going anywhere
An old Toyota is a nice cheap ride if it was about cost

oh yeah, and my 30 year old Seca still walks away from everybody at the red light

The sellers on E-Bay seem to have a love affair with the parts - asking three prices, every part is a "buy it now" instead of an auction (on an auction site), then there's the morons on Craigslist who ask $500 for a non-running, NO title rust pile of a bike.

But they persist, so there must be a sucker born every minuite.

The way I look at it, once you put the money into them to make them safe, sure, kbb value may be lower than what you have into it, but for what you have, its still a pretty damn good deal - considering people pay $3000+ for a 49cc moped...
