Hey guys, im back after a short hiatus of being away. I had to move, change jobs, and I got a Viper to take my mind away from here for a while. ANyways, I am looking into the future to get this bike going in the springtime. I did some minor maintenance earlier when I first got it, but now I have a provincial inspection to pass, and this will be my daily driver to and from work.

I was just thinking about going a tranny fluid change on my car and I was thinking about my xj650. sorry if this sounds dumb, but does the transmission and rear end on my bike require some sort of fluid change? if so is there a link to these on this site.

    thanks

The Transmission Gears New Oil at every Oil and Filter Change.

    The Final Drive is scheduled.
But, a change of Gear Oil at the beginning of each Season could not be easier.

Make a chute out of Tin Foil to prevent the draining-out Gear Oil from getting on the Rim and Tire.

    Replace the drain plug.
    Fill with Top-of-the-line Racing Hypoid.

Fill it right up to the last Thread before overflowing-out the drive.

Sunoco High Performance Gear Oil (Hypoid) 85W/140 [Exceeds recommended-better protection]
    Shell Helix (same)

Sorry, that first sentence of yours...did you mean to say the transmission gets new oil at every oil and filter change?

Are there any o-rings or gaskets that also have to be replaced during the final drive fluid change?

engine and tranny share the oil , when doing a routine final drive oil change you dont need any o rings or gaskets but the plug from memory has a crush washer but this will probably be ok, dont over tourque sump plugs and a little smear of anti sieze doesnt hurt, in my opinion

The Transmission GETS New Oil at every Oil Change.

With the Drain Plug OUT of the Final Drive, ... shoot Disc BrakeKleen into the Air Slot of the Breather atop the Final Drive.
    Let it drip out.

Dress the Threads on the Drain Plug with Petro-safe Teflon Tape.

hey guys, I got the final drive drain plug out, but I was just wondering, which thing up top is the fill hole/bolt. In the middle area of the case I see another bolt, and up on the top portion i see a cap (and I can't get that cap off). I tried to loosen the bolt in the middle section, but this bad boy wont budge and I didnt want to overdo it before i knew if this was even the right one. If the bolt on the middle section is the fill hole, is the bolt a regular bolt to get out or is it something stupid like reverse thread?

    thanks

The Cylindrical Object at 12 O-Clock is a Vent.

The Hex Plug at 4 O-Clock is the Filler Plug.

    Right-ee --> Tight-ee ... Left-ee --> Loose-ee

You should put a 6-Point Socket on it or a 6-Point Box Wrench and give the Ratchet or Wrench a good whack with a Hammer Handle.

And after you fill and go to put the bolt in don't over-torque it like the PO did.

you think if either of them would be overtorqued it would be the drain bolt, not the filler bolt

I once bought a boat with an Evinrude outboard.

It came with a "pump to fill the lower unit with oil"......

AND a "siphon to get the old oil out"

You can never assume that a PO of anything actually knew anything more than

    insert key
    turn to start

    LOL

Should be enough for 2 changes. Takes roughly 2/5ths of a quart to fill from empty.

Nobody mentioned the middle gear drain plug! this one gets missed alot, in the Haynes manual on page 83 there is the reference to the drain plug. Get a mirror and look under the engine near the back of the oil pan, it's kinda hard to see but it's there.

That's because we try to steer clear of that drain plug, since 99 times out of 100 the plug hasn't moved in 30 years and has a rather annoying habit of snapping off.

Way more work than is necessary for the amount of oil that is in there. The few ounces of oil that remain in the middle gear will get cycled through with a couple of oil changes.

Agreed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to leave the middle gear drain plug alone.

Taking the chance on breaking it just isn't worth it. There's only a hundred CC's or so of oil in there, if that.

I guess I see the logic of that, actually I have never removed one because I forgot about it. Is the plug fitted with a magnet? I seem to recall, somewhere in the dusty corners of my memory reading about this. Thanks for the reminder TSKAZ and Fitz!

    Drain ALL your oil

I found 7 ounces in the Middle Gear Cavity, but I don't recommend pulling the plug
