I changed the oil and filter in the bike today, and now it's got a leak around the oil filter housing.

I replaced both of the o-rings with new ones that came with the Fram oil filter, and I tightened the oil filter bolt to spec (11 ft-lbs).

I read some stuff on this forum about the large o-ring possibly getting pinched when reinstalling the oil filter housing. Is there any way to tell that this has happened (besides the obvious leaking of oil)? I guess I'll have to take it off anyway. Does the oil sit low enough that I can remove the filter housing without draining the rest?

What should I do to stop the leak?

You must have pinced the outer o ring. Park the bike on a hill and investigate...I usually coat my o ring in grease so that it stays in place when assembling

It won't all drain out, but you could elevate the front and keep it from having that chance at all. If all you changed was the oil/filter and fitted new oiled o-rings then it's probably pinched and not sitting flush in the channel. It's gotta come off.

Don't think it makes much of a difference because mine has been skewed before and not leaked, but I always hold the assembly when tightening to keep it lined up (fins on engine with filter cover fins) and use my hand to apply the pressure not the bolt until it's almost tight. Make sure it's all clean too, could be something on the ring or on the case creating a pathway for the oil to escape.

It's also possible the filter housing is "hung" on one of the fins and it didn't actually seat and get properly tightened down; you need to be careful about the "rotational position" when reinstalling it so that the vertical tab goes between the two fins it lines up with.

You'll lose about a third of your oil when you pull the filter housing back off; just be careful not to overfill as a result when you're done.

    +1 on a bit of debris across the "O" ring ;

-1 on losing any more oil than what's in the filter housing and cooler lines.

If you had one of chacals spin on adapters that wouldn't happen

    Try it again,
Pinching the O-Ring is fairly common.

Grease the O-ring so it stays-put in the Locating Channel.
Smear Oil on the Base of the Dome
AntiSeize the leading 20mm of the Bolt Threads.
Smear Oil in the Dome's Bolt Opening Hole and Outer O-ring,

    Install.

When the Dome gets close to its Seat.
HOLD the Locating Tab at 6 O'Clock while tightening the Bolt.
    Don't let the Dome rotate.
    Clean ... Run.
    Ck for leaks.
