Best source for a service manual?

    RickCoMatic is suggesting that those sending out the mail order CDs are due for jail time.

    I just want to work on my bike in the next couple weeks, what manual should I purchase?

    My bike is a 1980 xj650maxim.

    I'm looking for service specs initially then maybe a how-to for cam chain replacement, etc...

    Am I not seeing the how-to section with step by step write ups and pictures?

    Don't worry about REPLACING the cam chain. Not unless you have reason to believe it's got issues.

    How about adjusting it first? This is from a 550, but it's the same style of tensioner:


    1. Remove ignition cover (left crank end.)

    Everyone has an opinion about what is necessary. For me I just want to catch up on maintenance. I know the bike hasn't had its valves adjusted in the last 12,000 miles either. I don't know how to begin doing that.

    Thank you for the tightening how to for the chain.

    The bike felt awesome when I test drove it, at least I don't have to start with a bike that hasn't been driving in a few years. The high miles are a concern but the fact the bike has been a daily driver for the last 18 months is encouraging.

    You're not going to encounter anything that some (or most of us) haven't encountered already, and likely solved. Some things (like POD filters, continue to spark debate.) But we can help you through pretty much anything that crops up; plus help you pre-emptively KEEP them from popping up.

    You already know how to adjust your cam chain, and you don't even have a book yet. How bad is that?
